IND vs NZ T20 World Cup 2026 Final Live: Varun Removes Seifert as India Put One Hand on Trophy — New Zealand 83/5

India are on the brink of history. A stunning collective bowling performance has New Zealand reeling at 83/5 — needing an impossible 184 runs off the remaining overs. Varun Chakravarthy, who had been taking punishment from Tim Seifert, had the last laugh as the wicketkeeper-batter holed out at the boundary for 50. Ishan Kishan, who has been extraordinary behind the stumps all night, took yet another stunning catch. The T20 World Cup 2026 trophy is nearly India’s.

How India Took Apart New Zealand’s Chase

The story of New Zealand’s chase has been one of individual brilliance drowned out by collective collapse. Tim Seifert was genuinely sensational — smashing Hardik Pandya for two sixes in a single over early on, single-handedly keeping the Kiwis from falling apart even earlier. He raced to a 23-ball fifty — a one-man rescue act that briefly gave New Zealand faint hope.

But around him, India’s bowlers were ruthless. Axar Patel was the pick of the lot — removing Finn Allen with a smart catch at long-on in the third over, then producing a stunning armball to castle Glenn Phillips through the gate, leg stump flying. “Bapu tu kamal che,” said it all.

Jasprit Bumrah — as inevitable as ever — got Rachin Ravindra first ball, with Ishan Kishan diving forward for a brilliant take. He then conceded just 5 runs in the final powerplay over as New Zealand’s required rate climbed to 15 per over.

Hardik Pandya chipped in with Mark Chapman’s wicket — a chop-on that summed up New Zealand’s miserable evening with the bat.

Then came the moment that effectively ended the contest. Varun Chakravarthy, under pressure after being hit for two sixes by Seifert, fired in a short delivery. Seifert hit it hard toward midwicket boundary — but Ishan Kishan covered enormous ground, took the catch, and then tossed it back over the rope to regain his balance. Out for 50. New Zealand 83/5. Game over.

At the end of the powerplay, New Zealand trailed India’s powerplay total by a massive 40 runs — an almost unbridgeable gap in T20 cricket. Learn more about the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Wikipedia.
