HBO’s Lanterns Trailer Just Proved the DCU Doesn’t Need Explosions to Be Exciting

Forget the CGI sky battles and city-destroying finales. James Gunn’s Lanterns just dropped its first official trailer — and it looks nothing like what you’d expect from a Green Lantern story. No intergalactic war, no alien armadas. Just two mismatched cops, a small-town murder mystery, and the best buddy-cop chemistry DC has put on screen in years. This might quietly be the most important show in the entire DCU.

According to Wikipedia’s Green Lantern article, the Green Lantern Corps has been one of DC’s most iconic space-based superhero concepts since 1959 — and this grounded detective reimagining is the freshest take the franchise has received in decades.

What the Trailer Actually Shows Us

The trailer opens with John Stewart and Hal Jordan in a car. Stewart — fresh off two months of training — still hasn’t been allowed to wear the ring. Jordan’s response? “Don’t get hung up on the jewelry, Junior.”

What follows is a masterclass in character tension. Jordan promptly leaps out of the moving car, leaving Stewart stranded. When a rattled Stewart confronts him (“I could’ve died”), Jordan simply says: that was the training. From there, the two land in a small American town wrapped around a murder mystery — each convinced they know best how to handle it.

The tone is unmistakably prestige TV: slow-burn tension, sharp dialogue, and two leads with completely opposing philosophies. Then, just as the drama builds, Jordan delivers the line of the trailer. Asked whether he’s spoken to the other Lanterns, he replies: “I’m only a human. They’re aliens. One of them is a f**ing squirrel.”*

Why This Could Reshape the Entire DCU

Lanterns isn’t just a superhero show — it’s Gunn’s proof that the DCU can do genre storytelling. A Green Lantern detective drama signals that every corner of this universe can be its own genre: noir, horror, comedy, action. If Lanterns lands well, expect the storytelling template to influence every DCU project that follows.

Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) and Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) are arguably the most grounded lead pairing the DCU has assembled so far — two actors known for quiet intensity rather than blockbuster spectacle.
