HBO’s Lanterns Season 2 Renewal Update Sparks Online Debate

Few shows have sparked as much confusion this year as Lanterns. Despite strong buzz and record-setting numbers, conflicting reports have fans arguing online about whether HBO’s DCU mystery series is actually getting renewed — or quietly stuck in limbo.

What’s Actually Confirmed So Far?

According to a Puck report, DC Studios opened a writers’ room for Season 2 before Lanterns even premiered in August, but the work so far is limited to early pitch pages. In plain terms: a renewal isn’t official yet, even though HBO executives reportedly want the show to continue.

Adding to the shake-up, Lost creator Damon Lindelof and DC Comics veteran Tom King have both exited the writers’ room. Showrunner Chris Mundy remains, now joined by Halt and Catch Fire writer Chris Cantwell.

Why the Confusion Started?

The debate largely stems from a misread comment. When HBO CEO Casey Bloys was asked if more DCU projects were in active development beyond The People v. Gorilla Grodd, he simply said no. Many fans took that as confirmation Lanterns Season 2 wasn’t happening at all — but Mundy had already told The Hollywood Reporter back in August that the team was roughly six weeks into laying out a season, just not ready to formally discuss it yet.

Should Fans Be Worried?

Not particularly. James Gunn has confirmed that DC Studios’ plans remain unaffected by Paramount’s ongoing acquisition of Warner Bros., meaning corporate changes likely aren’t the obstacle here. The real deciding factor will be sustained viewership through the rest of the season, paired with HBO signing off on the new writers’ room’s pitch.

Mundy has teased that a potential Season 2 would be told in a “slightly different” structural style while still keeping fans’ favorite characters, likely with Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart continuing to lead the story.
