First he was locked away, and then he wasn’t. Lanterns has quietly turned one of its biggest villains from a prisoner into a problem, and the final episodes may have just set up the DCU’s first Yellow Lantern.
Spoiler warning: this post covers Lanterns Season 1 through the finale.

From Prison to Planet
Early in the season, we learn that Sinestro staged a coup, killed a Guardian of the Universe, and was brought down by Hal Jordan. He ended up in an off-world prison, and Hal visited him for answers about the Manhunters.
Then came the reversal. In Episode 6, Guy Gardner tells John that someone broke Sinestro out of “Spacekaban.” Episode 7 shows where he went: Antaan’s dead homeworld, on an island where a tower pumps out the same fear gas that destroyed Antaan’s people.

Who Freed Him, and Why?
The finale reveals that Noah Macon, the last remaining Manhunter on Earth, broke him out in exchange for a Lantern. Noah wanted one so he could use it as insurance against the Guardians if he ever got a power ring. Since Sinestro is the only person the series says has ever killed a Guardian, he was the obvious choice.
The Dark Lantern
Using the planet’s leftover fear, Sinestro forged a new lantern, which DC Studios officially labels the “Dark Lantern.” It’s the first on-screen hint of the Yellow Light of Fear and the Sinestro Corps.
What About Hal Jordan?
The finale confirms Hal is truly dead, with a catch. Sinestro told John and the Halogram that with a ring, he could pull Hal out of John’s head and bring him back. The Halogram refused, but The Direct notes that many see the offer as a deliberately open door for Season 2.
What Could Come Next?
- Sinestro finishing the job by making a ring for himself
- A possible yellow lantern, and the start of the Sinestro Corps
- A fear-powered Hal, which would spell trouble for John and Guy
- A Legion of Doom-style alliance, as fan theory suggests
