Hardik Pandya is set to make a much-anticipated return to India’s domestic cricket, joining the Baroda squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). Under the leadership of his elder brother Krunal Pandya, Baroda aims to clinch the title after falling just short in the previous edition. With the tournament commencing on November 23, the Pandya brothers are ready to deliver a thrilling campaign for their home team.

Hardik’s Return to SMAT

For the first time since 2016, Hardik Pandya will represent Baroda in the domestic T20 tournament. National team commitments often kept the dynamic all-rounder away from domestic fixtures. However, this year’s SMAT offers him the opportunity to bolster Baroda’s lineup with his experience and skill.

Hardik comes into the tournament in fine form, having recently reclaimed the top spot on the ICC T20I all-rounders list. His performances in the T20I series against South Africa showcased his impact, with figures such as 1/8 in three overs in Johannesburg and a vital unbeaten 39-run knock in another match.

Krunal’s Stellar Form as Baroda’s Leader

Krunal Pandya has been a cornerstone for Baroda in the ongoing domestic season. His exceptional run in the Ranji Trophy saw Baroda register four wins out of five matches, including a memorable victory over Mumbai, helping them top Elite Group A.

The southpaw’s contributions have extended beyond leadership, with 367 runs in seven Ranji innings, including a century and three fifties. His consistent form carried over from the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) tournament, where his hundred in the final secured the title for his team.

In the 2023 edition of SMAT, Krunal was Baroda’s standout performer, amassing 323 runs with three half-centuries and taking seven wickets at an economy rate of 6.03. He will look to replicate and surpass this success in the upcoming tournament.

Baroda’s Aspirations and Group Stage Challenge

Baroda’s runner-up finish last year under Krunal’s captaincy was bittersweet, but with the addition of Hardik, the team is poised for another strong campaign. The squad has been placed in Group B alongside strong contenders like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Saurashtra, as well as Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Tripura, and Sikkim.

Baroda will aim to build on their recent successes and capitalize on the star power of the Pandya brothers. Hardik’s explosive batting and sharp bowling, combined with Krunal’s all-round contributions, offer a balanced attack and defense for the team.

Hardik’s Form and Ranking Milestone

Hardik’s return comes at a high point in his career. The premier all-rounder recently dethroned England’s Liam Livingstone to reclaim the top spot in ICC’s T20I all-rounder rankings. His ability to influence games with both bat and ball was evident during the South Africa series, further enhancing his reputation on the international stage.

Reflecting on his rankings achievement, Hardik said, “It’s always an honor to represent India and contribute to the team’s success. Rankings are a reflection of hard work, and I hope to bring the same energy to Baroda.”

The Pandya Legacy in Baroda Cricket

This year’s SMAT marks a special chapter for the Pandya brothers, with Hardik playing under Krunal’s captaincy. Their bond and shared vision have been pivotal in shaping Baroda’s cricketing fortunes.

“Krunal has always been a leader on and off the field,” Hardik stated in a recent interview. “To play under his captaincy and contribute to our home team’s success is something I’m looking forward to.”

Krunal reciprocated the sentiment, saying, “Having Hardik in the team strengthens us immensely. His presence boosts our confidence as we aim for the title.”

With the Pandya brothers leading Baroda’s charge, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy promises excitement for fans and fierce competition for opponents. Hardik’s international pedigree and Krunal’s domestic dominance create a formidable combination for a team hungry for success.

As Baroda gears up to turn last year’s heartbreak into triumph, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the Pandya brothers’ impact on India’s domestic T20 stage. Will their synergy deliver the much-coveted title? Only time will tell.
