Grammarly has officially discontinued its Expert Review AI feature, marking one of the more striking product retreats in the writing-tools space this year. The feature promised human-level editorial feedback powered by AI, but it quietly disappeared after failing to deliver on that promise. As The Verge first reported, the rise and fall of Expert Review tells us something important about what happens when AI ambition gets ahead of actual execution.

Inside Expert Review: The Full Story

Grammarly launched Expert Review as a premium add-on that aimed to combine AI speed with human editorial judgment. The idea was simple: upload your document and get back polished, context-aware feedback in minutes instead of days. Here’s the problem: users quickly discovered the output wasn’t consistent. Sometimes it nailed it. Other times it felt generic and off-target.

The feature never really left its beta state. Grammarly eventually pulled it without much fanfare. No replacement has been announced, which stings for paying subscribers who’d built their workflows around it.

Grammarly vs What Came Before — Why This Retreat Matters

Grammarly made its name doing one thing well: reliable, rule-based grammar correction. Expert Review was a bigger bet — they wanted to move into AI-generated editorial intelligence. That’s a much harder problem, and it shows.

This isn’t unique to Grammarly. Artists face critical questions about whether AI can genuinely replicate editorial nuance. But for a company valued at $13 billion in its last major funding round, quietly killing a flagship AI feature sends a message worth paying attention to.

Stats & Key Facts About the Expert Review Shutdown

Here’s what the numbers tell us:

Grammarly’s valuation: $13 billion (2021 funding round)
Expert Review pricing: positioned as a premium tier add-on above standard Pro plans
User base: 30 million+ daily active users globally
Feature lifespan: launched and discontinued within roughly 18 months
Replacement announced: None confirmed as of April 2026

Worth noting: Google’s Gemma model and similar AI writing tools are now putting real pressure on Grammarly daily. Losing Expert Review doesn’t break the product, but it does narrow the company’s competitive edge in an increasingly crowded field.

Analysts Weigh In on the Platform’s AI Setback

The real question keeps coming up: can Grammarly compete at the editorial AI layer, or is it stuck being a grammar-and-style tool? People watching the AI writing space aren’t shocked by this pullback. Creating AI that actually delivers useful, document-specific editorial feedback — not just grammar flags — is one of the hardest unsolved problems right now.

Grammarly may have underestimated how big that gap is. The worry isn’t just one failed feature. It’s whether the company has the AI research chops to catch up.

The Road Ahead for Grammarly

Grammarly hasn’t gone silent. The company continues investing in its core AI writing assistant and has hinted at expanding into enterprise integrations. Without Expert Review, though, they’ve lost ground on the “full editorial AI” vision they were chasing.

Keep an eye out: does Grammarly announce a rebuilt version of Expert Review? Or do they quietly pivot back to what they do best — grammar correction? Either way, it’ll tell you exactly where the company thinks its future is headed.
