Google just rewired India’s digital backbone. At the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, CEO Sundar Pichai announced the America-India Connect initiative — three new subsea fiber-optic cables linking India to the US across four continents, anchored by a $15 billion AI hub in Visakhapatnam (Vizag) that will include gigawatt-scale compute and a brand-new international subsea gateway.

Google America-India Connect: Full Breakdown

The initiative will establish a new international subsea gateway in Vizag, three new subsea paths connecting India to Singapore, South Africa, and Australia, and four strategic fiber-optic routes that bolster network resilience between the US, India, and multiple locations across the Southern Hemisphere.

Pillar	Details
Cable 1	Vizag + Chennai → South Africa (combined with Equiano & Nuvem systems → US east coast)
Cable 2	Vizag → Singapore (combined with Bosun & Tabua → US west coast via Australia)
Cable 3	Mumbai → Western Australia (combined with TalayLink & Honomoana → US west coast)
AI Hub	Vizag — gigawatt-scale compute, built with Bharti Airtel, $15B investment
Vizag Gateway	New international cable landing station; diversity from Mumbai & Chennai
DeepMind Partnership	ANRF collaboration — AlphaGenome, AI Co-Scientist, Earth AI access for Indian researchers
Science Fund	$30M Google.org Science Impact Challenge grant
Education	Atal Tinkering Labs — Gemini AI in 10,000+ schools, 11 million students
Public Services	Google Cloud + Karmayogi Bharat → iGOT platform for 20M public servants, 800+ districts, 18+ Indian languages
Skilling	Google AI Professional Certificate Programme in English and Hindi

Why Vizag Changes India’s Internet Geography

Until now, India’s primary international subsea cable landings were concentrated in Mumbai and Chennai. The new routes will establish Vizag as a major international subsea gateway, adding vital diversity from existing landings and increasing the resilience of India’s digital backbone. For AI workloads specifically — which require low-latency, high-bandwidth connections to US cloud infrastructure — this redundancy matters enormously.

The Airtel partnership is the commercial anchor: Airtel and Google will jointly establish a purpose-built gigawatt data centre in Vizag between 2026 and 2030 to support AI workloads, with Airtel constructing a new cable landing station to host new international subsea cables.

On the science side, Google DeepMind’s collaboration with the Anusandhan National Research Foundation gives Indian researchers direct access to tools like AlphaGenome and AI Co-Scientist — targeting breakthroughs in genomics, climate science, and beyond.

Pichai summed it up simply: “Google has full-stack connectivity in India, and I have never been more excited about the future we are building together.”
