The global smartphone shipments have seen an 8.9% decline YoY in Q1 2022

The global smartphone shipments decline 8.9% in the first quarter of 2022 analogous to the same January to March quarter in 2021, according to International Data Corporation (IDC). This is a drop for the third successive quarter, as shipments fell to 314.1 million units in Q1 2022 analogous to 344.7 million in Q1 2021.

Samsung grips the first spot with a 23.4% share, its high quarter since the first quarter of 2018, but it dropped 1.2% YoY. Apple has an 18% share and is the only organization in the top 5 to post a hike in YoY shipments, even though it is just 2.2%. Chinese vendors Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo grip 12.7%, 8.7%, and 8.1% shares respectively.

There was a radical drop in shipments in all these companies. According to the report, Samsung and Apple have handled the supply chain condition a bit better than their opponents to hike the shipments.

Nabila Popal research director at IDC’s statement

“Although some drop was anticipated in Q1, due to the recent supply and operational provocations and challenging year-over-year analogy, things appear to have taken a turn for the bad. Consumer opinion all over the district, and especially in China, is universally negative with huge concerns around the boom and economic fluctuations that have affected consumer spending.

This is now biformed with the increasing costs of components and transportation and the recent lockdowns in Shanghai, which are aggravating an already worse situation. On top of all this is the Russian breach of Ukraine, which abruptly impacted that region and continues on an unknown trajectory. Given all these ambiguities, most OEMs are taking a more traditional growth design for 2022.

Linda Sui, Senior Director at Strategy Analytics, said, “We calculate global smartphone shipments to contract -1% to -2% YoY in full-year 2022. This year will be a fable of two halves.

Geopolitical matters, component shortages, price hikes, exchange rate  irregularity, and Covid interruption will continue to weigh on the smartphone market during the first half of 2022, before the circumstances ease in the second half due to Covid vaccines, interest rate increases by central banks, and less supply disturbance at factories.”
