In an unexpected development at the IPL 2025 auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand’s dynamic all-rounder Glenn Phillips found himself unsold despite his impressive versatility and recent international performances. The former Sunrisers Hyderabad player, who had set a base price of Rs 2 crore, will now wait for the accelerated round for another chance at securing an IPL contract.

While going unsold in the initial round might be disappointing, Phillips’ track record and multi-dimensional skillset make him an attractive prospect for teams looking to strengthen their squads. His ability to impact games in multiple ways could still see him picked up in the accelerated round, potentially making him one of the steals of the auction if a team can secure his services at his base price.

FAQs

Q1: Why would a versatile player like Glenn Phillips go unsold in the IPL auction?

Despite his versatility, factors such as team composition needs, budget constraints, and specific role requirements influence auction dynamics. Teams might be looking for specialists in certain positions rather than multi-skilled players, or his base price of Rs 2 crore might have been considered high for the role teams had in mind.

Q2: What makes Glenn Phillips valuable in T20 cricket?

Phillips’ value stems from his ability to contribute in multiple areas: he’s an aggressive batsman capable of playing various positions, bowls useful off-spin, excels in fielding both inside the circle and in the outfield, and can serve as a backup wicketkeeper. This versatility allows teams to maintain flexibility in their playing XI.
