In a landmark disciplinary decision, UEFA has handed Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni a six-match suspension for discriminatory conduct that was deemed homophobic during a Champions League match against Real Madrid. “To suspend SL Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni for a total of six UEFA club and/or representative national team official matches for which he would otherwise be eligible, for discriminatory (ie homophobic) conduct.”

The suspension for three of these matches is subject to a probationary period of two years. This decision includes the one-match provisional suspension served by the player during the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 knock-out play-off match played on 25 February 2026 between Real Madrid CF and SL Benfica.

The Incident

The Argentine winger was accused of directing a slur at Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr during the Spanish side’s 1-0 Champions League playoff first-leg win in February. Prestianni covered his mouth with his shirt when speaking to Vinicius Jr, with the Brazil international immediately reporting racist language to the referee Francois Letexier. Vinicius left the field and refused to return after Prestianni’s comments, resulting in a stoppage in play that lasted 10 minutes.

Three of those six matches are suspended for a two-year period and the ban also includes the one match Prestianni served as a provisional suspension in February. Therefore, unless he triggers the suspended three-match ban, he will only actually be sidelined for two further games.

Investigation Findings

UEFA appointed an ethics and disciplinary investigator after the match, with the investigation having concluded Prestianni’s conduct was homophobic rather than racist. After the game, several of Vinicius Jr’s Real Madrid teammates, including Kylian Mbappe, said they heard Prestianni call Vinicius Jr a “monkey”, but midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni said Prestianni admitted to him that he instead directed a homophobic comment towards Vinicius Jr. UEFA’s investigation did not find him guilty of racist abuse, sparing him from a far harsher minimum 10-match suspension.

World Cup Implications

UEFA has requested FIFA to extend worldwide the above-mentioned suspension. UEFA’s ruling means that Prestianni’s punishment would apply to matches at this summer’s World Cup, but only if the 20-year-old winger is called up by Argentina and FIFA extends the ban worldwide. Otherwise, it would be served in next season’s UEFA competitions.

Benfica’s Response

Benfica said they had been notified about the sanction imposed on Prestianni. “Of the three-match effective ban, one has already been served and the remaining two must be served in UEFA matches or Argentina national team matches in a FIFA context,” Benfica said.

Potential Rule Changes

The incident could yet spark a law change, with the International Football Association Board (IFAB) set to meet in Canada next week ahead of FIFA Congress to further consider how players are dealt with if they cover their mouths to talk to an opponent in a confrontation. FIFA president Gianni Infantino said last month that a red card should result, telling Sky News: “If a player covers his mouth and says something, and this has a racist consequence, then he has to be sent off, obviously. There must be a presumption that he has said something he shouldn’t have said, otherwise he wouldn’t have had to cover his mouth.”

Wider Debate

The case has reignited debate around discrimination in football, particularly regarding the disparity in punishments. While racist abuse carries a minimum 10-match ban, homophobic conduct has historically resulted in lighter sanctions, raising questions about consistency in enforcement. With governing bodies pushing for tougher regulations, this case could prove to be a turning point in how football addresses all forms of discriminatory behavior moving forward.

FAQs

What was Gianluca Prestianni banned for?

Gianluca Prestianni was banned for six matches by UEFA for discriminatory conduct deemed homophobic toward Vinicius Jr during a Champions League match in February 2026.

How many matches will Prestianni actually miss?

Prestianni will only miss two more matches effectively, as he has already served one provisional match and three of the six matches are suspended for a two-year probationary period.

Will the ban affect Gianluca Prestianni’s World Cup participation?

It could, if FIFA extends the ban worldwide as requested by UEFA. The suspension would then apply to Argentina’s World Cup matches if Prestianni is called up.

Why was Prestianni not banned for racism?

UEFA’s investigation concluded that Prestianni’s conduct was homophobic rather than racist, sparing him from the harsher minimum 10-match suspension for racist abuse.
