The German Films & Series You Need to Know

Unfamiliar — Hidden in the heart of Berlin, ex-spies Simon and Meret run a safe house. When a buried threat resurfaces, they are forced to simultaneously evade assassins, Russian agents, and their own complicated past. A tightly wound spy thriller that launched February 5 — and it’s already one of the year’s strongest debuts.

Crap Happens — A rapper-turned-pizza baker reluctantly returns to his small hometown after his mother’s death and discovers a talking baby duck named Tupac and a teenage son he never knew existed. Unexpectedly touching and very funny.

Crooks Season 2 — Frederick Lau and Christoph Krutzler return as the unlikely criminal duo, this time drawn into a coin heist that spirals across three national borders while battling clans from Berlin, Vienna, and Marseille. Bigger, messier, and more chaotic than ever.

Murder Mindfully Season 2 — Tom Schilling returns as mindfulness-practising mafia handler Björn Diemel, now battling his “inner child” while being simultaneously blackmailed and investigated. Season 3 is already confirmed — that tells you everything about how good this show is.

The Trap — A successful author who hasn’t left her house in ten years since witnessing her sister’s murder believes she spots the killer on TV and sets a dangerous trap — using herself as bait. A nerve-shredding psychological thriller.

The Empress Season 3 — The beloved historical drama returns for its six-part finale. Elisabeth fights for her marriage and empire as Emperor Franz returns traumatised from war, and a fateful new acquaintance promises to reshape the future of Europe. 23,000 Lives — Inspired by a true story, Louis Hofmann (Dark) leads a group of young people who buy a fishing vessel to rescue refugees in the Mediterranean, saving 23,000 lives — until the law catches up with them. One of the most powerful films on the slate.

Eat Pray Bark — Five eccentric dog owners head to the Tyrolean mountains for training, only to discover that the dogs were never the problem. A charming, warm-hearted comedy.

Schumacher ’94 — An intimate documentary revisiting Formula 1’s most dramatic season, featuring personal reflections from Corinna Schumacher on her love story with Michael. Essential for motorsport fans.

Poldi — A documentary following German football legend Lukas Podolski from immigrant child to World Cup champion and entrepreneur, filmed near the end of his playing career.
