Some stories borrow from mythology just for flavor. Gandhari does something bolder — it takes one of the most tragic, passive figures from the Mahabharata and reimagines her as an unstoppable force of maternal rage. Netflix India’s newest thriller reunites one of its most reliable creative pairings — writer Kanika Dhillon and actor Taapsee Pannu — for their sixth collaboration, and it might be their most intense yet.

In the original epic, Gandhari is a queen who blindfolds herself in solidarity with her husband and watches helplessly as all 100 of her sons perish in war, never able to intervene. Dhillon flips that narrative entirely, reimagining a version of Gandhari who doesn’t stay silent — she fights back.

What’s the Story?

The plot follows Bani, a mother whose young daughter is abducted at a crowded railway station. After a brutal attack leaves Bani temporarily blind, she must claw her way back from trauma to confront a chilling child-trafficking network hidden within a town steeped in ancient folklore. What begins as a mother’s desperate search evolves into something closer to myth — a woman transformed into a mythic force of justice, determined to save her daughter and every other missing child before it’s too late.

Why This Reinterpretation Matters

Dhillon has spoken about wanting to give Gandhari the agency the original epic never allowed her — turning passive suffering into active resistance. Pairing that ambition with Pannu, who reportedly underwent intense physical training including aerial yoga for what may be her most demanding role yet, signals that Netflix India is positioning this as a prestige thriller rather than a straightforward genre piece.

With a runtime under two hours and subtitles or dubbing available in over 30 languages, Gandhari looks built for a wide, global rollout.
