From Solid Opening to Real Momentum: “Resident Evil” Is Winning Over Indian Audiences

Horror films with international IP don’t always translate at the Indian box office. This one’s bucking that trend in a big way. Resident Evil has continued its strong run in India, grossing an estimated Rs 8.50 crore over its first two days, building on a promising opening and signaling a genuine success story in the making.

A Strong Second-Day Jump

The film opened solidly with Rs 3.75 crore gross on Day 1, which included Rs 50 lakh from preview screenings — already a promising sign for a horror title without major Bollywood star power driving ticket sales. Saturday saw an even stronger jump, with collections climbing to an estimated Rs 4.70 crore, pushing the two-day total to Rs 8.50 crore. That kind of day-over-day growth typically signals strong word-of-mouth and audience reception carrying the film forward into the rest of its opening weekend.

What “Resident Evil” Is Actually About?

This installment follows Bryan, a medical courier navigating a snowy winter night while transporting sensitive medical cargo to Raccoon City General Hospital. When a sudden viral outbreak throws the city into chaos, Bryan finds himself fighting to survive while still trying to complete his delivery — a premise set alongside the timeline of the classic Resident Evil 2 video game.

Directed by Zach Cregger, the film marks the second reboot attempt within the long-running franchise, starring Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, and Kali Reis in key roles.

Why This Performance Matters?

A rising Day 2 after an already solid opening is one of the clearest early indicators of a film’s potential to sustain itself through its full theatrical run, rather than fading quickly after a front-loaded weekend. For a franchise built on established video game IP, this kind of momentum in India suggests the brand’s appeal — long tied to the broader legacy of the Resident Evil games and their survival-horror roots — continues to resonate with audiences well beyond its original gaming fanbase.

If the upward trend holds through Sunday, the film is well-positioned to close its opening weekend as one of the stronger Hollywood horror releases in the Indian market this year.
