FROM has spent four seasons slowly building its mythology, and Episode 5 — titled “What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been” — might be its most unsettling hour yet. Two major storylines collide: a terrifying monster attack at the lake cabin, and a psychedelic vision quest that could finally hold the key to escaping Fromville.

The Lake Group: Scarecrow Dolls from the Deep
Picking up directly from the cliffhanger at the Lake of Tears, Donna, Ellis, Patty, and a deeply paranoid Roger haul the mysterious floating mass out of the water — only to discover it isn’t a collection of decayed corpses but rather three life-sized, deeply unsettling scarecrow dolls stuffed entirely with wool and rags.

Donna reckons the dolls look like scarecrows and assumes they were placed in the water to stop whatever monstrosity is lurking down there from coming out. With a bit of haste, the group floats them back into the water and sets about getting ready to spend the night in a nearby cabin.
But the dolls are familiar to Tabitha — and that familiarity is the episode’s most chilling reveal. During the night, after hearing some distant singing, she recalls why. They used to be hers. She would play with them as a child, but an angry man took them from her, claiming they gave him nightmares. When that man died, his nightmares emerged from the lake. AsianWiki
Before the group can reinforce their perimeter, the talismans fail completely against this new threat. A colossal scarecrow breaks through the cabin walls, executing Roger in a horrific, chest-ripping fashion — making him the first to die despite his earlier refusal to touch the lake’s rope. Ellis manages to save Patty from a fiery death, while Tabitha successfully incapacitates another scarecrow using past life memories, forcing the remaining entity to retreat into the dark.

Jade’s Mushroom Trip: A Vision Quest into Fromville’s Heart
Back in the post office, Jade’s mushrooms have kicked in, and before he goes fully under, he agrees on a safe word with Boyd — “Capricorn” — so that if things get too carried away, he can be brought back. AsianWiki
The vision quest leads Jade to a 12-year-old version of himself playing the violin in the woods — the day his grandmother died; she asked him to play, and he didn’t stop until long after she had passed. It was easier than facing the reality of her death. The dude who was nailed to a tree and wants Jade to drink a skull full of blood also appears, repeating “Anghkooey” — meaning “Remember.” AsianWiki
The hallucination spirals deeper into the Township’s underground tunnels, tracking a path to the clearing where the Smiley creature was born. Jade is violently shoved into an open grave surrounded by seven strategically placed stones. The Hollywood Reporter
He wakes up screaming back inside the post office, realising he never actually left the room. Everything — the spiders, the ghosts of past incarnations, the grave — was due to the mushroom effect. He wakes up saying: “What the fu*k are we doing here?” ZAPZEE
Despite the trip being entirely in his mind, Jade claims to know the answers to the town and how to get out — meaning he has seen the grave of the children and the manner of their death. But whether or not it will work is still a mystery, and whatever he does to test the theory might have to be done in secret if he doesn’t want to die.
What Does It All Mean?
FROM is building to something massive. The scarecrow dolls have confirmed that the township’s monsters can be born directly from human nightmares, and that Tabitha’s past lives are directly tied to the town’s origin. Jade’s vision has revealed a potential path out — but at what cost?
