Four reasons why Chelsea sacked Frank Lampard after 18 months

Chelsea have now officially sacked Frank Lampard as the Head Coach of the club, and Thomas Tuchel is waiting in the wings to be officially announced as the next in charge of the Stamford Bridge Blues.

After 18 months in charge, and as their best ever player, Lampard is, and will continue to be the most cherished Chelsea player in the eyes of the Blues faithful. However, there were some serious problems with the former Chelsea player’s return to the club, which we’ll talk about below.

The first, and arguably the most disappointing of all was the lack of a clear cut plan for the players on the pitch this season, that has caused them to underperform on many occasions, oftentimes even in victories. There was no concrete vision for the future and the XI often looked lost, playing meaningless passes in their own half between defenders.

Secondly, the addition of so many new players over the course of two seasons, and the loss of Eden Hazard in 2019 coupled with the transfer ban was something that Lampard dealt well with. But despite spending a fortune in the summer, the team has been missing the same drive and energy that they showed in important games last season.

Third, the over-rotation of in-form players in favour of keeping them fresh. An extended run of assured game time in the first team was barely available to anybody in the team, and the centre-back partnership between Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma was also often replaced with Christensen or Rudiger.

And lastly, but most importantly was the run of poor results, with defeats away at Everton, Wolves, Arsenal and Leicester City, along with a humiliating home defeat to Manchester City that sees Chelsea in ninth place at the midway mark in the season. The Blues have not won a single game against the bigger clubs in the division, which only goes to show the quality of play this season.
