What Is East of Eden About?

At its heart, East of Eden is a multi-generational saga following the Trask family across California — a sprawling, Biblical story about good and evil, free will, and family legacy. What makes Netflix’s adaptation particularly distinctive is its approach: the story is told primarily through the perspective of the novel’s most complex and morally ambiguous character, Cathy Ames, portrayed by Florence Pugh.

It’s a bold creative choice — Cathy is one of literature’s most fascinating villains — and with Pugh also serving as an executive producer on the project, expect her fingerprints all over how this character is crafted and presented.

East of Eden : A Cast That Is Genuinely Staggering

Netflix has assembled one of the most impressive television ensembles in recent memory for this production.

Actor	Character
Florence Pugh	Cathy Ames
Christopher Abbott	Adam Trask
Mike Faist	Charles Trask
Hoon Lee	Lee
Tracy Letts	Cyrus Trask
Martha Plimpton	Faye
Ciarán Hinds	Samuel Hamilton
Joseph Zada	Cal Trask
Joe Anders	Aron Trask

Mike Faist (Challengers, West Side Story) and Christopher Abbott (Poor Things) alongside Florence Pugh — this is the kind of casting that makes awards voters sit up and pay attention.

The Legacy Connection That Makes This Extra Special

There’s a remarkable personal thread running through this production. Writer and executive producer Zoe Kazan is the granddaughter of Elia Kazan — the legendary director who helmed the iconic 1955 film adaptation of East of Eden starring James Dean. Zoe has spoken about the weight of that connection, noting that it was ultimately Steinbeck’s own writing that drew her to the project as a young reader. The echoes of cinematic history make this adaptation feel genuinely momentous.
