It wasn’t pretty, but the 2026 World Cup favourites march on. Kylian Mbappé made it 19 goals in 19 World Cup appearances as his 70th-minute penalty helped France reach the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Paraguay at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32

In what was a feisty clash where tempers flared on more than one occasion, Mbappé stayed calm under pressure to seal his team’s progression. Their reward is a reunion with Morocco in the last eight. France beat the Atlas Lions 2-0 in the semi-finals of the World Cup four years ago in Qatar.

First Half: Frustration for France

Many expected France to breeze past giant-killing Paraguay, but Didier Deschamps’ side did not have things their own way. Paraguay, as they had done against Germany in the previous round, frustrated France with a compact five-man back line and aggressive defending.

It was only the fourth time since 1966 that Les Bleus failed to manage a shot in the first 20 minutes of a World Cup match. Manu Koné’s deflected shot off Diego Gómez almost nestled in the bottom-left corner a few moments later to break the deadlock.

Mbappé was then inches away from getting on the end of Ousmane Dembélé’s teasing delivery before Adrien Rabiot fired way over Orlando Gill’s crossbar from distance. A yellow card for Bradley Barcola on 19 minutes was one of three cautions France collected across the match, while remarkably, none of Paraguay’s players were shown a yellow card. This was the first time since 1998 against Nigeria that Paraguay didn’t pick up a single card in a World Cup match.

It was only the third World Cup knockout game since 1966 to not have a single shot on target in the first half. France stacked seven corners and forced Paraguay deep, but the interval arrived at 0-0.

Second Half: Doué’s Impact and Mbappé From the Spot

Another stinging shot from Koné in the 54th minute forced Gill into action for the first time. Deschamps then turned to his bench and introduced Désiré Doué for Dembélé, and the Paris Saint-Germain forward made an instant impact.

A VAR check at 67 minutes did not award a spot-kick. But three minutes later, Doué was tripped in the penalty area by Gómez. Referee Tantashev pointed to the spot after being sent to the pitchside monitor for a VAR review. Doué became the second substitute to win a penalty for France in a World Cup match, after Randal Kolo Muani in the 2022 final versus Argentina.

Kylian Mbappe

Paraguay, as they had done for much of the game, attempted to delay the restart and put Mbappé off, but the France captain remained unfazed and sent Gill the wrong way from 12 yards to net his 11th knockout goal at the World Cup, three more than any other player in the history of the competition.

Mike Maignan had to be on his toes at the other end to thwart Mauricio late on, while a brilliant double save from Gill denied Mbappé twice in quick succession as France held on through 10 minutes of stoppage time.

France’s dominance was comprehensive. They completed 568 passes to Paraguay’s 183. Paraguay completed just 54% of their passes (99 of 183), the lowest passing accuracy in a FIFA World Cup knockout match on record (since 1966).

France’s final-third phase numbers were stark: they completed 199 of 233 actions there at 85%, while Paraguay managed 13 of 51 at 25%. France won 73% of aerial duels and made 25 touches in the Paraguayan penalty area compared to 4.

Paraguay’s numbers speak to a rearguard effort that worked for long stretches. They won 69% of their tackles and made 29 in total, more than double France’s 14. They recorded 14 interceptions and 22 clearances in the first half alone (11 interceptions and 17 clearances). Long balls were a release valve, but accuracy lagged at 12 of 55 completed (22%), while France hit 26 of 42 (62%). Crosses frustrated both sides, with France at 1 of 23 and Paraguay at 0 of 4.

Player Spotlight: Orlando Gill’s Heroics and Mbappé’s Record

Orlando Gill earned Player of the Match honors for keeping Paraguay alive through 70 minutes despite France’s sustained pressure. He made 4 saves, including 2 from inside the box, and posted 0.82 goals prevented. He added 1 high claim and 1 punch when France peppered the area with set pieces and crosses. His distribution was long and direct, completing 6 of 23 long balls. He also tallied 7 recoveries. Given France hit 5 shots on target to Paraguay’s 1, this was a goalkeeper performance that kept the 90 minutes alive.

Mbappé led the line with menace and end product. He had 5 shots, 4 on target, 1 big chance missed, and the winning goal from the spot. He also supplied 2 key passes and logged 1.09 expected goals (xG) on the night. On the day he captained France for the 10th time at a major tournament (becoming the fourth player to do so), Mbappé scored France’s 150th World Cup goal. Only Brazil (246), Germany (243), and Argentina (163) have managed more in the competition’s history.

Since the 2018 World Cup, Mbappé’s 19 goals is four more than any other player at the tournament, while his 11 goals in the knockout stages in that time is more than Brazil and England (both 10). He went level on seven goals with Lionel Messi for the tournament’s Golden Boot.

Doué changed the temperature when introduced at 61 minutes, winning the penalty and threading 3 key passes in just 29 minutes with 5 progressive carries among 12 ball carries total.

At the back, Dayot Upamecano went 61 of 65 in passing, adding 4 tackles, 11 recoveries, and 4 interceptions. William Saliba swept up with 10 clearances and 63 of 66 passes completed. Jules Koundé and Lucas Digne pushed high, combining for 9 tackles and 10 won duels. For Paraguay, Andrés Cubas impressed with 7 tackles and 3 interceptions in midfield.

Paraguay’s Brave Exit

Paraguay’s obdurate defending deserves praise, but their antics arguably overshadowed it. Omar Alderete went off hurt on 58 minutes and Julio Enciso followed on 61 minutes. Gustavo Caballero and José Canale came in as Paraguay shuffled to cope. Mauricio and Gabriel Ávalos arrived on 71 minutes to chase an equalizer. Despite the late changes, Paraguay created just one shot on target all night.

Gill’s display was a clear positive, as was Cubas’ bite in midfield. Paraguay left the tournament with a performance that will travel well into the next cycle, having already pulled off a stunning penalty shootout victory over Germany.

What This Means for Both Teams

France are through to their ninth FIFA World Cup quarter-final. Only Brazil (15), Germany (14), and England (10) have reached this round more often. This was also France’s eighth victory against a South American team at the World Cup; only Brazil (10) and Germany (15) have won more matches in the competition against CONMEBOL sides.

France advanced because they controlled almost every repeatable metric and found the one high-impact action that counts. For the next round against Morocco, they will want a little more accuracy from wide areas and a little less drama from VAR. For now, the job is done.
