When Deepika Padukone made her grand Bollywood entrance in Om Shanti Om back in 2007, audiences were floored. Her grace, her screen presence, her timing — all of it felt natural. But here’s the thing: it wasn’t accidental. Director Farah Khan has finally pulled back the curtain on the months of meticulous preparation that went into shaping one of Bollywood’s most successful debuts — and the story is genuinely fascinating.

Farah Khan’s 3-Step Blueprint for Deepika’s Debut

During a candid conversation at actor Dia Mirza’s home on her YouTube cooking vlog, Farah addressed Deepika directly and said, “Deepika, so much care I took of you.” She then revealed exactly what that care looked like in practice.

Training Phase	What Deepika Did
Step 1	3–4 months of acting classes at Anupam Kher’s institute
Step 2	Enrolled in Kathak dance classes for screen grace
Step 3	Extensive look tests before a single shot was filmed
Step 4	First 10 days on set — just observing, no acting

The Masterstroke: Learning by Watching Shah Rukh Khan

The most fascinating part of Farah’s method was something beautifully simple. Rather than throwing Deepika into the deep end on Day 1, Farah deliberately pushed her actual shooting schedule back by 10 days. But Deepika still had to show up to the set every single day.

The instruction was clear: “For the first 10 days, just come to the set and just be there. See how Shah Rukh Khan is working, how Shreyas Talpade is working. Just come and sit there every day.”

It was on-the-job learning at its finest — absorbing professionalism, work ethic, and screen craft simply by being in the same room as one of Bollywood’s greatest performers.

Om Shanti Om went on to become a massive commercial blockbuster that cemented both the film’s legacy and Deepika’s career trajectory in ways nobody could have predicted at the time.

Why This Story Matters Today?

Farah’s revelation came in sharp contrast to what her guest Dia Mirza described about the early 2000s — where new actresses were simply thrown into gruelling 28-hour workdays with zero prior training or preparation of any kind. Farah Khan’s approach to Deepika’s debut was a rare exception, and it paid off spectacularly.

It’s a reminder that great Bollywood debuts aren’t made overnight — they’re built with patience, preparation, and the right mentor watching over you.
