Facebook & Instagram Crashed Today — Here’s Everything You Need to Know About the June 12 Meta Outage

If you opened Facebook this morning and found yourself staring at a blank page — you weren’t alone. On June 12, 2026, Meta’s platforms suffered a massive global outage that left millions of users locked out, confused, and, predictably, flooding over to X (Twitter) to find out what was going on.

What Happened with Facebook & Instagram?

What Users Experienced

Users were automatically logged out and found themselves unable to log back in, instead being shown an error message saying “an unexpected error occurred.” The main Facebook website displayed a similar error, and Facebook Messenger also went down along with the main app. Yahoo!

Screenshots showed Facebook opening to a blank page or displaying only gray loading placeholders where posts normally appear. Reports came in from users in the United States, Australia, Belgium, and the Philippines — some said they had been logged out, while others could open the app but couldn’t refresh feeds or load posts. Instagram users were greeted with blank feeds and repeated “unexpected error” and “query error” messages, with the disruption hitting Facebook’s desktop site, mobile app, Messenger, and portions of Instagram’s feed and login systems. Newsweek

Meta’s Official Word

Meta issued a brief public statement: “We’re aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We’re working on it.” The company’s business tools status page had not been updated to reflect the outage at the time, leaving users without an official channel for updates. UNILAD

The root cause has not been publicly disclosed. This isn’t the first time Meta has faced a large-scale disruption — the infamous 2021 Facebook outage lasted nearly six hours and was traced to a BGP configuration error that took down all of Meta’s data centers simultaneously.
