The Esports World Cup (EWC) has announced its 2027 EWC Qualifier Program, a new initiative designed to broaden access to the premier esports tournament. This program, part of the larger Road to EWC strategy, aims to engage 1.8 million players through over 400 competitive events throughout 2027.
The initiative seeks to integrate established tournaments and grassroots esports communities worldwide into the EWC qualification pathway. By connecting publisher-led leagues, international competitions, and regional qualifiers, the Road to EWC endeavors to unify existing competitive ecosystems under a single global championship.
Faisal Bin Homran, Chief Product Officer at the Esports Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Riyadh, noted the program’s potential to provide more opportunities for players within their local communities and integrate local esports ecosystems into the pathway to the Esports World Cup.

Esports World Cup: New Qualification Pathways
The EWC Qualifier Program introduces two distinct partner-operated routes for participation:
* **EWC Direct Qualifiers:** This route expands existing connections between established esports tournaments and the Road to EWC. Organizers of these events will maintain operational and financial autonomy, retain local commercial opportunities, and ensure compliance with EWC and publisher standards, while offering an official qualification route to the Esports World Cup.
* **EWC Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers (SLCQs):** A new pathway targeting grassroots participation, this route allows local tournament organizers, federations, associations, cyber cafés, universities, esports venues, and gaming festivals to connect existing events or establish new competitions. The Esports Foundation will provide marketing support, and winners will secure guaranteed entry into relevant EWC Last Chance Qualifier tournaments, where they will compete for a spot in the main EWC event. The Esports Foundation will also cover accommodation and visa support for winners.
Initially, SLCQs will feature titles such as Chess, Counter-Strike 2, FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves, and Street Fighter 6, with additional games expected to be announced. All qualifiers, both Direct and Satellite, must adhere to publisher requirements and EWC competitive standards, encompassing rulesets, anti-cheat measures, officiating, and verified results.
The effectiveness of additional qualification pathways has previously been demonstrated through the EWC’s Last Chance Qualifiers. For instance, João “jafonsogv” Vasconcelos advanced through the EA SPORTS FC Last Chance Qualifier in 2024 before securing the EWC championship.
