Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree: A Duality of Difficulty and Performance

The arrival of Shadow of the Erdtree, the highly anticipated expansion for Elden Ring, has sent shockwaves through the gaming community.

While the expansion surged Elden Ring back to the top of Steam charts with a peak of 781,000 concurrent players, user reviews on the expansion itself paint a contrasting picture.

A Mixed Reception for the Lands of Shadow

Despite the excitement, Shadow of the Erdtree’s current “Mixed” user rating on Steam stands in stark contrast to the base game’s impressive 92% positive score. Out of over 34,000 reviews, only 65% endorse the expansion. So, what’s causing this disparity?

Two main issues plague user experience: excessive difficulty and persistent performance problems.

A Challenge Too Great?

Players are finding the new content in Shadow of the Erdtree brutally tough. The Lands of Shadow introduce formidable enemies that can quickly overwhelm even seasoned Elden Ring veterans. This unforgiving difficulty spike has left some players feeling frustrated and alienated.

Performance Hiccups Linger

Adding to the frustration are ongoing performance issues, particularly on PC. Reviewers and players alike report frame rate drops, stuttering, and occasional freezes, even on high-end machines. This is a continuation of problems present in the base game, which many hoped the expansion would address.

Miyazaki on Difficulty: A Balancing Act

In a recent interview, Elden Ring creator Hidetaka Miyazaki defended the game’s challenging nature. He believes lowering the difficulty would diminish the sense of accomplishment players feel upon overcoming obstacles. This core philosophy is a cornerstone of FromSoftware’s Soulsborne titles, and it seems Miyazaki is unwilling to compromise.

The Question Remains: Is FromSoftware Pushing the Limits?

The “Mixed” reception for Shadow of the Erdtree raises a question: is FromSoftware pushing the limits of player tolerance with their signature difficulty? While some players relish the challenge, others might find it frustrating and inaccessible.

Is There a Middle Ground?

The debate surrounding difficulty in Shadow of the Erdtree, and Elden Ring as a whole, is a complex one. Can FromSoftware find a way to retain the challenging spirit of their games while making them more approachable for new players? Perhaps exploring optional difficulty settings or improved tutorials could provide a solution.

The Future of FromSoftware: Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree

The reception of Shadow of the Erdtree offers valuable insights for FromSoftware’s future endeavors. If the studio continues down the open-world path, addressing performance issues becomes paramount. Additionally, the difficulty debate necessitates careful consideration to ensure their games remain engaging for both veteran players and newcomers alike.
