The film dropped by 25 per cent on its second day after taking an already underwhelming start, adding just Rs. 75 lakh on Day 2 and bringing its two-day cumulative to Rs. 1.75 crore nett at the Indian box office. That downward trend on Day 2 — when films typically show a bump — essentially sealed the film’s fate before the first weekend was even over.

Let that sink in for a moment. Mounted on a budget of nearly Rs. 75 crore, Ek Din is now expected to wind up its entire theatrical run under the Rs. 5 crore mark — making it one of the biggest disasters in recent Bollywood history. The scale of the loss is staggering.

What Went Wrong?

The film is reportedly an adaptation of the popular Thai romantic drama One Day, centring on a couple dealing with a rare memory disorder. Despite a compelling premise and a cast that includes Kunal Kapoor and Sai Pallavi, audience traction simply never materialised.

This is Junaid Khan’s third film after Maharaj (a direct OTT release) and Loveyapa (a box office flop). His next project is reportedly Ragini 3, a horror comedy co-starring Tamannaah Bhatia, while Sai Pallavi will next be seen in Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana.

The core lesson here is one Bollywood keeps learning the hard way — star power alone doesn’t drive footfalls. Audiences today want stories that connect authentically, and a remake-heavy approach without a strong marketing hook is a tough sell.
