Dorothy: Keerthy Suresh’s Rustic Drama Dares To Ask What Masculinity Really Costs

Some films chase spectacle. Others chase something harder — the quiet, uncomfortable truths buried in ordinary lives. “Dorothy,” starring Keerthy Suresh and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, appears to be firmly in the second camp, and its newly surfaced synopsis suggests a story with real emotional teeth.

What’s Dorothy About?

Set in rural Tamil Nadu during the early 1990s, the film follows two childhood friends who grow up in a world shaped by division, violence, and toxic masculinity. Their worldview shifts when a compassionate woman challenges the prejudice surrounding them. Years later, their bond is tested when one is sent to track down the other — setting off a journey layered with love, guilt, and human dignity. Reports also suggest the film may touch on themes connected to the LGBTQ+ community, adding another emotionally rich layer to its narrative.

It’s a premise that trades mass-market spectacle for something more introspective — and given Karthik Subbaraj’s track record with layered storytelling, expectations are already building.

Dorothy: Overview

The Team Behind Dorothy

Karthik Subbaraj has both written and directed the film, with music and background score composed by the legendary Ilaiyaraaja. The project is produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor, and Achin Jain under Dhammam Films — a combination that signals a serious, festival-leaning independent drama rather than a conventional commercial release.

Keerthy Suresh’s Packed Slate

Keerthy Suresh was last seen headlining Revolver Rita, and she has an eventful lineup ahead — including Rowdy Janardhana opposite Vijay Deverakonda (releasing December 2026), along with Thottam, Sathyavan Savithri, and January 12 Vidudala alongside Venkatesh Daggubati and Nandamuri Kalyan Ram. It’s clear the actress, known for her range across genres, is deliberately balancing commercial entertainers with more character-driven projects like Dorothy.

Why It Matters?

Films that confront toxic masculinity through intimate, character-driven storytelling rather than loud messaging tend to resonate longer with audiences. With Karthik Subbaraj’s direction and Ilaiyaraaja’s score anchoring it, “Dorothy” could be one of the more talked-about indie releases of the season.
