Dhanush Reveals Why His Next Directorial Is Still Years Away — And Fans Won’t See It Coming

Dhanush is one of Tamil cinema’s busiest men right now — and he just proved it with a jaw-dropping revelation about his future as a filmmaker. Spoiler: director Dhanush isn’t returning anytime soon, and here’s the honest reason why.

Dhanush Big Revelation: No Director’s Chair Yet

Speaking to the media in Coimbatore ahead of Kara‘s release, Dhanush laid out his packed acting schedule with zero sugarcoating. Three directors are already waiting with scripts for him. He has to complete D55 for Rajkumar Periyasamy, act in Mari Selvaraj’s film, work with Lubber Pandhu director Tamizharasan Pachamuthu, and — only then — wrap up the long-awaited Vada Chennai 2. His honest admission? Directing will only happen after all of this — meaning fans may need to wait a few years at least.

That’s not a complaint. That’s a man who is deeply in demand, and he knows it.

Dhanush’s Immediate & Upcoming Films At a Glance

What Is Kara About?

Set in 1991 Ramanathapuram against the backdrop of the Gulf War, Kara follows Karasamy — a reformed thief forced back into crime to reclaim his mortgaged ancestral land and fulfil his dying father’s last wish. It’s a period action thriller unlike anything Dhanush has done before, directed by Vignesh Raja with music by GV Prakash Kumar.

Co-starring Mamitha Baiju, KS Ravikumar, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Jayaram, the film hits screens on April 30, 2026. For more South Indian film coverage, check out technosports.co.in.

What About Idli Kadai — His Last Directorial?

Dhanush’s directorial Idli Kadai — a heartfelt drama about a man returning to his village to revive his late father’s idli shop — starred Nithya Menen, Arun Vijay, and Sathyaraj alongside Dhanush himself. It is currently streaming on Netflix and was widely appreciated for its warmth and authenticity.

That’s the bar he has set for himself as a filmmaker — which is probably exactly why he won’t rush back to the director’s chair.
