David Raya Deserves the Spotlight After Arsenal’s Controversial Win at West Ham

David Raya would have been at the centre of the conversation after Arsenal’s potentially decisive 1-0 win at West Ham on Sunday, regardless of the VAR controversy that followed.

The difference is that the controversy consumed everything. The squabbling over the disallowed Callum Wilson equaliser — the apparent foul by Pablo, the VAR intervention, the legitimacy of the decision — drowned out any recognition of what Raya had done in the moments before it.

A few minutes before Pablo committed the challenge that led to Wilson’s goal being chalked off, Raya came to Arsenal’s rescue. There was nothing controversial about that intervention. It was simply excellent goalkeeping at a crucial moment.

Mateus Fernandes burst into the Arsenal box, played a sharp one-two with Pablo, and found himself one-on-one with the Spanish goalkeeper. He shaped to shoot one way before aiming for the near post. Raya made the vital intervention.

The look on Mikel Arteta’s face afterwards said everything. Arsenal had been bailed out.

The Golden Glove: Third Successive Award

That save — combined with the VAR intervention that followed — secured David Raya the Premier League Golden Glove, the award presented to the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets in a season. What makes the achievement particularly notable is the consistency across multiple seasons it represents.

This is the third successive season in which Raya has won — or shared — the award. And his numbers this season surpass both previous campaigns.

If Raya keeps two more clean sheets before the end of the season, he will reach 20 — a figure achieved by only six different goalkeepers in Premier League history. Joining that list would place him in genuinely illustrious company.

The only other goalkeepers to win or share the Golden Glove in three successive seasons are Pepe Reina, Joe Hart, and Ederson. Only Hart and Petr Cech have won it more than three times in total — four each. Raya is already in rare territory.

What Clean Sheets Actually Tell Us

It is fair to point out that clean sheets are not a pure measure of goalkeeper quality. Ten outfielders have a say in whether the opposition scores, and Arsenal’s defensive structure — largely consistent since Raya arrived — deserves significant credit.

But there is a point at which correlation between excellence and output becomes too strong to ignore. Raya has kept a clean sheet in 44.3% of his Premier League appearances for Arsenal. Among goalkeepers with 50 or more games for a single club in the competition, only four have recorded shutouts in a greater proportion of matches.

Raya has not won games through a series of jaw-dropping, physics-defying saves. His case is built on something more subtle and arguably more valuable: dependability.

He has committed just one error leading to a goal in the Premier League this season — and he would have a reasonable case that he was not truly at fault even for that one, given that Gabriel Magalhães headed the ball essentially out of his hands just before Wolves equalised in February’s 2-2 draw at Molineux.

Raya has played considerably more minutes than the goalkeepers who have avoided errors entirely — making his near-flawless record even more impressive.

His save percentage of 69.8% ranks sixth in the Premier League this season. He faces fewer shots than many other goalkeepers — a natural consequence of playing behind Arsenal’s elite defensive structure — which means his absolute save numbers will always be lower. But that also means he operates frequently as a sweeper-keeper and ball-player, roles that introduce their own risk of errors. The fact he has made just one error leading to a goal across those 3,240 minutes covers both dimensions.

The Concentration Factor

Raya’s consistency through quiet spells is perhaps his most underrated quality. The comparison with his predecessor at the Emirates is instructive.

A key criticism of Aaron Ramsdale during his time at Arsenal was a lack of concentration — something Ramsdale himself acknowledged candidly in an interview, stating: “If you ask me to focus on a game of football for 90 minutes, I’m finished. I can’t do it.”

Raya has given no such indication. Martin Ødegaard recently described the Spaniard as “so consistent” — a simple but telling endorsement from Arsenal’s captain. It is difficult to argue with the assessment. The moments when Arsenal have most needed their goalkeeper — at Old Trafford on the opening weekend, at Molineux in February, against Brighton in December, against Newcastle last month — Raya has delivered.

The Moments That Could Define a Title

Those specific saves deserve to be named and recognised individually.

In each instance, Raya can legitimately claim to have earned Arsenal points that they would not otherwise have had. If this Premier League title is confirmed, those moments will be part of its story.

The Historical Record

Beyond the immediate context of this season, the broader picture of David Raya’s standing in Premier League history is becoming increasingly compelling.

His record of 0.79 goals conceded per match is the fourth best of any goalkeeper in Premier League history among those who have played 100 or more matches at a single club.

In terms of clean sheets across all competitions in 2025-26, Raya’s 27 shutouts has been bettered only five times in the Premier League era. The outright record — 32, set by Edwin van der Sar in 2008-09 — is beyond reach. But reaching Pepe Reina’s 30 clean sheets from 2005-06 for a share of second place remains a possibility.

Recognition Denied by Controversy

It is a strange irony that Raya was genuinely fouled in the incident that sparked the VAR controversy — and yet the controversy itself is what has prevented him from receiving the recognition he deserved for his own contribution to the win.

The save from Fernandes was significant. The clean sheet it helped preserve was decisive. The Golden Glove it confirmed was richly merited. And the victory at West Ham — potentially the one that handed Arsenal their first Premier League title in 22 years — was shaped, in a very real sense, by what David Raya produced on the pitch.

None of that made the headlines on Sunday. The VAR storm took them instead.

It was no fault of his own. But it was a disservice to a goalkeeper who has been outstanding all season, and who deserved far better than to have his finest individual moment of the campaign consumed by someone else’s controversy.
