Veteran Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea is reportedly set to continue his journey with Fiorentina. He joined the Italian outfit in August 2024 after a year-long hiatus from professional football.

Since then, the 33-year-old shot-stopper has become a key figure between the sticks for La Viola. Renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that the club is preparing to extend his contract by another year, ensuring his stay until June 2026.

Fiorentina’s Trust in Experience

Initially signed as a free agent following his exit from Manchester United, De Gea was expected to provide veteran leadership and depth. However, he exceeded expectations, starting 31 matches this season and recording 10 clean sheets — a testament to his continued sharpness and elite shot-stopping skills.

Fiorentina’s management has been thoroughly impressed by the consistency and leadership he’s brought to the backline. His extended deal symbolizes the club’s appreciation of his impact both on and off the field.

From Castaway to Crucial Cog

De Gea’s story over the past two years has been a rollercoaster. Once hailed as one of the finest goalkeepers in the world, his long stint at Manchester United ended unceremoniously when Erik ten Hag opted for a change in goalkeeping personnel. The Spanish international was released in the summer of 2023 and remained without a club for a year — an unusual scenario for a player of his pedigree.

But Fiorentina saw value where others hesitated. And now, the former Atlético Madrid academy product has once again proven his worth at the top level, becoming one of Serie A’s standout performers in his debut campaign.

Match Heroics Against AC Milan

One of De Gea’s standout displays came in a thrilling 2-2 draw against AC Milan at the iconic San Siro. Fiorentina surged to a 2-0 lead within the opening 10 minutes, but the Rossoneri clawed their way back with a goal in each half.

While the match ended in a stalemate, it was De Gea’s reflexes that stole the show. The Spanish keeper denied Rafael Leão with a breathtaking stop from point-blank range, before pulling off a sensational double save against Tijjani Reijnders and Christian Pulisic. His commanding presence and ability to produce under pressure were vital in securing the point.

Romano Confirms the Renewal

As per Fabrizio Romano, negotiations have progressed positively, with both parties satisfied. “David De Gea, set to extend his contract at Fiorentina for one more year — agreement now in place,” Romano reported. “De Gea, happy to continue in Italy after impressive season. Contract will be valid until June 2026.”

This official extension would give Fiorentina a reliable figure in goal as they aim to build on their recent progress in domestic and European competitions.

With the renewal in sight, De Gea is poised to anchor Fiorentina’s defensive structure for another campaign. His presence brings not just top-tier saves but also invaluable experience to a relatively young squad. La Viola, who are pushing for European qualification, see De Gea as integral to their ambitions.
