David Attenborough Returns to Rwanda After 48 Years — His Netflix Gorilla Documentary Is the Most Emotional Wildlife Film of 2026

Nearly five decades ago, a young David Attenborough knelt beside a baby mountain gorilla named Pablo in the forests of Rwanda. On April 17, 2026, Netflix brings that story full circle — and it promises to be genuinely unforgettable.

Gorilla Documentary: Everything You Need to Know

Why This Documentary Hits Different

It’s been nearly 50 years since Sir David Attenborough first encountered a playful baby mountain gorilla named Pablo in his seminal 1978 series Life on Earth. Netflix is reteaming with the legendary broadcaster for a stunning feature-length follow-up, bringing viewers back to the mountains of Rwanda to follow the “Pablo Group” — the direct descendants of the gorilla Attenborough met decades ago.

The emotional weight of that reunion alone is enough to make this one of the most anticipated nature documentaries in years.

A Conservation Story Worth Celebrating

When Attenborough first visited the legendary Dian Fossey in 1978, heavy poaching had reduced the mountain gorilla population to just 250. Today, thanks to dedicated conservation efforts and a sustainable tourism model that gives 10% of earnings directly back to local communities, there are over 600 gorillas thriving in Rwanda.

This is real, measurable hope — and Attenborough narrates it all from his personal 1978 journals. Now turning 100 on May 8 — just weeks after the film’s release — Attenborough recorded his entire 76-minute narration in a single, masterful afternoon session.

Behind the lens, cameraman Ben Cherry used a custom waist-level steady-cam rig to capture fluid shots right in the gorillas’ footsteps, and for the first time ever, the Rwandan government permitted careful drone use around the animals after the crew spent a year and a half proving their passive behaviour. Mountain gorillas remain classified as endangered, making this documentary both a celebration of conservation progress and a timely reminder of how much work still lies ahead.

Meet the Pablo Group — The Stars of the Film

The gorilla family at the heart of this story is full of drama, loyalty, and shocking twists that rival any human soap opera. Gicurasi is the aging dominant silverback whose leadership is beginning to fade, while Ubwuzu is an up-and-coming silverback in peak physical shape, poised to challenge for the crown. Teta, the dominant female, holds the real power — her choice of who to support ultimately decides the family’s future.

Most dramatically, Imfura commits an incredibly rare, never-before-filmed act of intragroup violence, leading to his dramatic banishment by the rest of the family. CineTalkers Wildlife television has never quite looked like this.
