What Happens in Season 4?
The eight-episode fourth season expands the scope of the show significantly, taking Lt. Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) from the Navajo Nation all the way to 1970s Los Angeles, where the team hunts for a missing Navajo teen and finds themselves in the crosshairs of an organised crime network. whats-on-netflix
That’s a bold and exciting creative leap — moving the familiar trio into a completely new environment while keeping the grounded, atmospheric tone that makes the show so compelling.
Just How Big Is Dark Winds on Netflix?
Very big — and the numbers prove it.
According to Netflix’s engagement metrics spanning June 2024 to December 2025, the series pulled in an impressive 37.5 million views and 176.6 million viewing hours. Among AMC titles on the platform, Dark Winds has consistently been one of the most-watched, sitting right behind Breaking Bad in daily average views.
That’s extraordinary company for a neo-noir Native American crime drama that didn’t have the marketing muscle of a major network blockbuster. Pure word-of-mouth power.
Season 5 Is Already Happening!
Good news for fans — this isn’t the end.
AMC officially renewed Dark Winds for a fifth season back in February 2026, before Season 4 had even premiered. Filming got underway on March 16th, 2026 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is scheduled to run through June 2026. Season 5 is expected to consist of another eight episodes and is slated to debut on AMC in 2027.
The show is in rude health — and clearly has plenty more story to tell.
