Danny Boyle’s Next Big Awards Contender ‘Ink’ Just Got a Release Date — And a Rare 28-Day Theatrical Run

Netflix doesn’t usually give films a month in theaters. For Danny Boyle’s new drama “Ink,” it’s making an exception — a clear signal of just how much confidence the streamer has in this one.

What Ink Is About

“Ink” is a biographical period drama adapted from James Graham’s Tony- and Olivier-winning play of the same name. It chronicles the birth of modern tabloid journalism, following a brash young Rupert Murdoch as he attempts to turn around the struggling British newspaper The Sun. Netflix describes it as the story of a group of visionaries and misfits who reimagined what news could be — and changed the media landscape as a result.

Ink: Cast and Creative Team

Directed by Academy Award winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting), with a screenplay by James Graham adapting his own play, the film is produced by STUDIOCANAL, Media Res, and House Productions. Composer Daniel Pemberton (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) provides the score.

Release Timeline

That gives “Ink” a full 28-day exclusive theatrical window — significantly longer than Netflix’s usual one-to-two-week Oscar-qualifying runs, and a strong indicator of how highly the streamer rates its box office and awards potential.

Why This Release Strategy Matters

Opening the Venice Film Festival is no small distinction, and combined with a rare extended theatrical run, it places “Ink” firmly in this season’s awards conversation. It’s also a notable bet for Netflix, which has historically kept theatrical windows minimal.

The Bottom Line

With a starry cast, a celebrated director, and an unusually generous theatrical window, “Ink” looks primed to be one of the season’s biggest awards contenders — in theaters December 11, on Netflix January 8.
