Dacoit: A Love Story Box Office — Rs 24.25 Crore Opening Weekend Is a Red Flag for Adivi Sesh’s Big-Budget Telugu Film

There are some weekends where the numbers tell a story before the credits roll — and Dacoit: A Love Story‘s opening weekend is one of them. Despite strong star power, high expectations, and a well-promoted bilingual release, Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur‘s romantic action drama has had a deeply underwhelming start at the Indian box office, raising serious concerns about its theatrical future.

Dacoit Box Office — Opening Weekend

The Numbers Don’t Lie — And They’re Worrying

A healthy Telugu film of this scale and budget needs its Sunday collections to spike — or at least hold steady. Instead, Dacoit saw an 8% drop on Day 3 (Sunday), slipping from ₹8.50 crore to ₹7.75 crore. That’s a bad sign. Sundays are supposed to be the strongest day for any theatrical release, especially in the opening weekend. When audiences don’t turn up even then, it signals weak word-of-mouth.

The territory-wise breakdown further confirms the struggle. The film drew heavily from its home ground of AP/TS (₹15.50 crore — about 63% of total), while the Karnataka market contributed just ₹3.15 crore and Tamil Nadu/Kerala combined added a mere ₹50 lakh. The Rest of India (Hindi belt and others) contributed ₹5.10 crore — far below what a big-budget bilingual needs to show genuine pan-India traction.

According to Wikipedia’s overview of Telugu cinema, the industry has grown significantly in pan-India reach in recent years, making this kind of limited geographic performance an even bigger commercial red flag for a well-produced bilingual release.

What Is Dacoit About?

The film follows Hari, a convict who, after a betrayal lands him in prison, plots revenge against his former lover Saraswati (Mrunal Thakur) upon his release. He becomes entangled in a series of robberies while pursuing his vendetta, until their paths collide once again in a conflict that blends crime, love, and revenge into one turbulent narrative. It’s a compelling premise on paper — which makes the underwhelming response all the more surprising.
