Cristiano Ronaldo’s club future is still up in the air

Before Portugal’s first match in Euro 2020 against Hungary, Cristiano Ronaldo was asked about his club future in the pre match press conference. The Portugal captain was naturally dismissive about the question, and here is what he had to say:

“I have been playing at the highest level for many years. This doesn’t faze me, maybe if I was 18 or 19 I might have had some sleepless nights, but I’m 36. Whatever comes will be for the best, regardless of staying at Juve or being transferred.

“The crucial thing now is the Euros, it is my fifth Euros, but for me it’s like my first Euros. We want to play a good match with good thoughts from the first to the last match.”

As revealed by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Ronaldo is being honest. He doesn’t know what’s going to happen himself, and is currently giving all his attention to the mammoth tournament at hand. The personnel at Juventus don’t know how the future looks either.

Fabrizio Romano provides an update on Cristiano Ronaldo situation

If some club arrives with an offer for the player, pays a transfer fee and will reach an agreement with his salary, they will let him leave. But, given the current situation it is simply a possibility. There are currently no negotiations between Cristiano, Juventus or another club. All parties are just waiting right now.

Ronaldo is currently paid a salary north of €30 million per season, and given the current financial climate, it will be difficult for any club to match that number. The situation will only become clearer once the Euros end and the transfer window begins.
