Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 4 Episode 4 Recap: “The Witching Hour” Delivers A Terrifying New Unsub

Just when you think the BAU could use a breather, Criminal Minds: Evolution throws them straight into one of its most disturbing cases yet. Episode 4, “The Witching Hour,” combines a chilling case-of-the-week with a major development in the season’s ongoing Voit mystery, and it’s easily one of the standout hours of Season 4.

Criminal Minds: The Colorado Springs Murdersta

The episode’s unsub, played by Dash Mihok of “Ray Donovan,” terrorizes families in Colorado Springs, breaking into homes after teenage children leave for school, then using a sledgehammer to kill one parent while forcing the other to watch. The killer, identified as substitute teacher Sean Fincher, targets couples this way, tying them up before carrying out his brutal “judgments”.

How The BAU Cracks The Case?

The investigation showcases some great team dynamics. Rossi gives Tyler room to form his own theories, even standing in as the killer himself to help Tyler think through the crime scene step-by-step, eventually concluding that the unsub put his victims on “trial” for heresy before killing them. A key breakthrough comes when a substance found at the crime scenes is identified as salt, leading Prentiss to deduce the killer is on a literal witch hunt.

The unsub’s twisted logic stems from an obsession with the Malleus Maleficarum, convincing him that infidelity makes his victims “witches” deserving of death, with his sledgehammer serving as a disturbingly literal “Hammer of Witches”.

The Bigger Mystery: Lance Kingston Arrives

While the Colorado Springs case anchors the episode, the larger season arc takes a major step forward. Connor Storrie debuts as Lance Kingston, a charming yet manipulative narcissist connected to a BAU stalking case, and he’s set to return in multiple future episodes, signaling he’ll be one of the season’s most significant recurring threats.

A Lighter Side Amid The Darkness

Away from the case, the show takes time to show the team healing. With Henry preparing for college and Will having been gone for a year, JJ and the team find comfort in supporting each other through the changes, with Luke helping JJ and Penelope manage things at home.
