Clayface Release Date: DC’s Body Horror Origin Story Teaser— And It’s Unlike Anything in the DCU

When James Gunn admitted that DC Studios “had no plans to make a Clayface movie” — and then immediately greenlit it because the script was that good — something unusual was being signalled. This wasn’t a calculated franchise move. This was a filmmaker surrendering to a great story.

The official Clayface teaser dropped on April 22, 2026. A

nd if it’s any indication of what October holds, DC just made its darkest, most disturbing film yet.

Clayface — At a Glance

What the Teaser Reveals

The minute-long teaser opens on Matt Hagen — a lantern-jawed, up-and-coming actor — lying in a hospital bed, bandages covering a face destroyed in a knife attack by a gangster. Quick flashbacks show the man he was before: charming, ambitious, performing.

Then comes the choice that changes everything.

As a last resort, Hagen turns to a scientist played by Naomi Ackie, who gives him an experimental treatment that transforms his body into something resembling living clay. What follows — glimpsed in horrifying flashes — is a man discovering he can reshape his face and form entirely, taking on any identity he chooses.

Set to a haunting remix of The Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize??”, the teaser is quiet, unsettling, and completely unlike anything the DCU has shown before. James Gunn himself tweeted upon release: “Look fear in the face.”

Why This Film Is Already Generating Serious Buzz

Mike Flanagan wrote the script. That alone is a reason to pay attention. The creator of The Haunting of Hill House and director of Doctor Sleep brings a psychological depth to horror that most genre films can’t match. DC co-chief Peter Safran has said the story is “equally resonant, compelling, and in many ways, more terrifying” than The Joker or The Penguin.

James Watkins is directing. His Speak No Evil was one of the most viscerally upsetting films of its year. His The Woman in Black proved he could sustain dread. Clayface seems tailor-made for his particular gifts.

Like Joker, this is a villain origin story — structured as a tragedy rather than a superhero adventure. Unlike Joker, it is firmly set within James Gunn’s DCU continuity, alongside Superman, Supergirl, Lanterns, and the upcoming The Brave and the Bold.

The comparison being made in industry circles is to David Cronenberg’s The Fly — a film about bodily transformation, identity, and the horror of becoming something you didn’t choose. The parallels are deliberate.

The Verdict on the Teaser

This is DC doing something genuinely new — not a sequel, not a team-up, not a retread. It’s a slow-burning psychological horror film about a man dissolving into someone else entirely.

If the full film delivers what this teaser promises, Clayface could be the most surprising blockbuster of Halloween 2026.
