Netflix India’s newest Hindi comedy series drops today, and it’s already got a distinct identity: instead of turning to Bollywood filmmakers like it has in the past, Netflix tapped Hats Off Productions — the team behind beloved TV comedies Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Khichdi — to lead its first Original series. Showrunner Jamnadas Matheja and writer-director Aatish Kapadia bring decades of sitcom expertise to a story built around community, chaos, and constant unsolicited advice.
What’s the Story?
Chumbak (meaning “Magnet”) is set in a contemporary Indian neighborhood where five families are so entangled in each other’s lives that “neighbours” might as well mean “family.” A small problem in one home doesn’t stay small for long — it quickly becomes everyone’s problem, whether they asked for it or not. It’s a warm, chaotic setup designed for multi-generational viewing.
Who’s In It?
The cast blends familiar Netflix faces with television veterans making their streaming debut. Neena Gupta, a regular in Indian Netflix Originals, leads alongside Deven Bhojani. Joining them are TV stars Helly Shah and Arjun Bijlani, who play the show’s central couple — a notable crossover moment, since Indian television actors have historically had fewer opportunities on global streaming platforms.

Why It’s Worth Watching
Hats Off Productions has a long history of shaping India’s television comedy landscape, and Chumbak continues that tradition of character-driven, situational humor — a style closely tied to the broader evolution of television in India, where family sitcoms have long been a cultural staple. Bringing that sensibility to Netflix signals a shift in how the platform is diversifying its India-focused storytelling beyond film-first talent.
