You Can Now Change Your Gmail Address — Here’s How to Do It Without Losing a Single Email

Yes, you read that right. Google is finally letting you change your Gmail address — the one you’ve had since 2009 that you’ve been mildly embarrassed about ever since.

There’s a Gmail address in all of our lives that we’d rather forget. Maybe it was created when you were fourteen and thought “xX**************@***il.com” was a perfectly reasonable identifier. Maybe it’s just an old name you no longer go by. Whatever the reason, Google has now made it possible to change your Google Account email address — and do it without losing a single message, photo, or file in the process.

Here’s everything you need to know, step by step.

Google Account Email Change — Key Facts

The One Thing That Makes This Actually Useful

The reason most people never bothered changing their Gmail address before was simple: there was no way to do it without starting from scratch and losing everything. Now, when you change your Google Account email, your previous address becomes an alternate email — you’ll receive emails to both your old and new addresses, and all your data including photos, messages and emails sent to the previous address remains completely unaffected.

You can also sign in with either your old or new email address across Google services like Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Google Play or Drive. Nothing breaks. Nothing disappears. It’s a clean change with a safety net.

Step-by-Step: How to Change Your Gmail Address

Step 1 — Check eligibility: Visit myaccount.google.com, click “Personal info”, then “Email”, then “Google Account email”. If you see a “Change Google Account email” option, you’re eligible. If not, the feature hasn’t rolled out to your account yet.

Step 2 — Review potential issues first. Before changing, Google recommends checking a few things:

• If you use a Chromebook, there are specific steps to take beforehand
• If you use “Sign in with Google” on third-party apps, your login may be affected
• Back up your data as a precaution — photos, contacts, Chrome sync settings

Step 3 — Make the change: Enter the new username you want to use — it must not be taken by any existing or previously deleted account. Click “Change email” and confirm. Your new address is live immediately, and your old one shifts to alternate status.

Important Limits to Know

You can change back to your previous Google Account email at any time, but you can only create a new Gmail address once every 12 months and a maximum of three times total, giving you up to four Gmail addresses on a single account over your lifetime.

Your old Gmail address can never be used by anyone else — even if you delete your Google Account, no one can claim your previous address. It’s permanently retired to your account history.

One caveat worth flagging: old instances won’t be changed retroactively — so Calendar events, shared Drive files, and things created before the change will still show your old email address. New activities will use your new address going forward.

What About Work or School Accounts?

If your Google Account email was set up through your work, school, or other organisation, you’ll need to contact your administrator to make changes — this self-service option only applies to personal Google Accounts.
