Google May Be Cutting Your Free Gmail Storage From 15GB to 5GB — Here’s What You Need to Know Right Now

If you’ve been relying on Google’s long-standing free 15GB storage offer for your Gmail account, there’s a development worth paying close attention to. Google appears to be quietly testing a significantly reduced free storage limit for new Gmail accounts — and the only way to unlock the full 15GB is by handing over your phone number. Here’s everything we know so far.

Gmail Storage: Key Facts at a Glance

What’s Actually Happening?

A Reddit user by the name of sungusungu shared a screenshot showing that their newly created Gmail account came with only 5GB of free storage — a 67% reduction from the 15GB that Google has offered since Google Drive launched its unified storage model back in 2013. Crucially, Google presented them with an option to “unlock” the full 15GB by simply adding a phone number to the account.

This is a significant shift from how Gmail has traditionally worked. For over a decade, signing up has meant automatically receiving 15GB of shared cloud storage across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos — no strings attached.

Why Is Google Doing This?

The Reddit community had mixed reactions. Some users immediately raised concerns about privacy, suggesting this is a clever new mechanism for Google to collect verified phone data from its users. Others took a more charitable view — pointing out that requiring a phone number could be a legitimate anti-spam and anti-abuse measure, making it harder to create throwaway accounts in bulk.

Both interpretations are plausible. Google has historically pushed phone verification as a security layer, but tying storage limits to that verification is a new approach entirely — and one that feels like it carries a dual purpose. Should You Be Worried?

For now — probably not. A few important points to keep in mind:

Google’s own support page still officially lists 15GB as the standard free storage for all accounts. No official announcement or policy change has been communicated. The author at Android Authority attempted to replicate the experience by creating a new account but was prompted for a phone number before even completing the signup — suggesting the experience may vary by region or account type. Existing Gmail accounts with 15GB storage appear completely unaffected.

This is most likely an A/B test being run in select regions, and it may never become a permanent policy. That said, the direction of travel is worth watching — Google has been gradually tightening free storage policies across its ecosystem over the past few years. What Should You Do in the Meantime?

If you’re creating a new Gmail account and want to secure the full 15GB, adding a phone number appears to be the straightforward unlock for now. For existing users, nothing changes. If you’re already concerned about storage, it’s worth auditing what’s eating your Google storage — large attachments in Gmail and high-resolution uploads in Google Photos are usually the biggest culprits.
