Central Cliffhanger	Alamo buries Rue and charges at her on horseback
Rue Dead?	No — confirmed alive in Season 3 trailer

What Happened to Rue in Episode 5?

Throughout Season 3, Rue has been working as a drug mule for Laurie before switching allegiance to strip-club mogul Alamo — and a DEA officer has since gotten her to work as a mole to investigate Laurie’s drug ring from the inside.

In Episode 5, Rue’s double life starts to crumble. After Rue tries to frame Magick (Rosalía) by planting cocaine baggies in her locker, Magick gets her revenge by convincing Alamo that Rue is a snitch who should have recognised the voices of the robbers from the previous episode.

Alamo finds Rue at a diner where she is sitting with Maddy. Instead of making a public scene, he calmly tells her to get into the truck outside. G and Bishop take her phone, drive her to a remote location, and bring her to Kidd — who is waiting with a shovel. Rue is forced to dig a hole, and once it is deep enough, they bury her body under the dirt with only her head above ground. By dawn, Alamo appears on horseback with a polo mallet, rides toward her screaming head — and the episode cuts to black. FandomWire

So, Does Rue Die?

No — and here’s the proof. In the Season 3 trailer at the 2:18 minute mark, Laurie is heard asking “What happened to you?” — to which Rue responds with a broken nose: “Alamo tried to kill me. And he’s going to do the same to you.” This confirms Rue survives and teams up with Laurie in Episode 6. The Tab

The cliffhanger functions primarily as psychological torture and a power move rather than an immediate execution — it literalises the suffocating pressure of Rue’s lies and forces her to confront the limits of her survival instincts.

The Other Major Storylines in Episode 5

Cassie’s Viral Spiral: Cassie hits 50,000 followers and starts appearing on podcasts, making increasingly explicit content as Maddy pushes her toward whatever will attract the most attention. The episode visualises this as a surreal sequence where Cassie literally grows into a giant figure towering over Los Angeles — less empowerment, more nightmare. Soapcentral

Nate’s Brutal Debt: After getting money from Cassie, Nate briefly believes he’s safe — but one of Naz’s men breaks into his house and violently cuts off another toe along with his ring finger while a little girl casually rides past on a bike outside. For the first time in Season 3, Nate has nothing.

What Does the Ending Really Mean?

The bigger question is not whether Rue survives the mallet — it’s what surviving will do to her. Will she finally tell the truth? Will she turn harder against Laurie and Alamo? Can Rue still save herself when every side now sees her as useful, guilty, or disposable?
