Google: Offering cashback and vouchers alone do not constitute a violation of our Google Play gambling policies

Google removed Paytm a few days ago, citing the latter of violating its gambling policies. According to Google any app on the Play Store that facilitates or promotes sports betting in India is in violation of Play Store’s gambling complicities. Play Store prohibits online casinos and unregulated gambling apps from carrying out online gambling.

Suzanne Frey, Vice President, Product, Android Security and Privacy, said: “We don’t allow online casinos or support any unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting. This includes if an app leads consumers to an external website that allows them to participate in paid tournaments to win real money or cash prizes, it is a violation of our policies.

However, on September 18 Google allowed the payments app Paytm back on its play store.

Offering cashback and vouchers alone do not constitute a violation of our Google Play gambling policies. Last week we reiterated our Play Store gambling policies. Our policies don’t allow online casinos or support any unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting, including daily fantasy sports in India. We enforce our policies very thoughtfully to provide a safe and secure experience for consumers, while also giving developers the platform and tools they need to build sustainable businesses. In the case of repeated policy violations, we may take more serious action which may include terminating Google Play Developer accounts. Our policies are applied and enforced on all developers consistently,” a Google spokesperson said.

Has Google taken action against any other such apps?

The title sponsor of IPL 2020 this year, Dream 11, has not been allowed on Play Store. The Android maker says that the app allows users to win actual money.

Will Paytm users be affected as a result of this?

Removal of Paytm from the play store did not in any way affected the payment process of any Paytm users. The only problem which users faced was that they were not able to update or download the app. However, the people who already had the app installed were able to use it normally.

However, only Google had taken the app down. iPhone users remain completely unaffected. Also, since only Google has taken the app down, iPhone users (who use the iOS version of the app) will remain unaffected.

In a tweet, Paytm said: “Paytm Android app is temporarily unavailable on Google’s Play Store for new downloads or updates. It will be back very soon. All your money is completely safe, and you can continue to enjoy your Paytm app as normal.”

Paytm removed the cashback components from the campaign late on Friday and was reinstated on the Play Store.

Microsoft to release a budget version of the Surface laptop

0

Microsoft has reportedly been working on a new surface laptop. The new surface laptop is rumored to be a budget version release.

According to Winfuture, the new surface laptop will run on Core i5 1035G1. then quad-core processor belongs to Intel’s old Ice Lake-U generation family. The processor also comes with 8 threads, 6MB of L3 cache, and four sunny clove cores. This chipset is also based on the 10nm process.

The surface laptop has made an appearance on the Geekbench benchmarking website. This has revealed a lot of details about the upcoming laptop.

It is revealed that the new surface laptop will be available in both 8GB of RAM and 16GB of RAM. The laptop is said to come in 8GB with 128/256 GB storage variants as well as 16GB with a 256GB SSD model.

Microsoft is also said to release a base model of 4GB, as it has always done with may of its products. However, the models with 8GB and 16GB models will reportedly by costlier than the 4GB variant.

The surface GO comes with a 10-inch display. It also comes featured with 8GB of RAM, up to 128GB storage, 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 8-megapixel rear camera, and comes with Intel Pentium Gold Processor 4415Y.

This will be the first time Microsoft will release any model with Intel’s 10th gen Core i5 1035G1 processor. But it is quite surprising to see Intel opting for Ice Lake instead of the new and promising Tiger Lake CPUs with Intel Xe graphics, maybe to cut down the prices.

The appearance of the new Surface laptop on the Geekbench benchmarking website has given away a lot of information. However, any other information such as the Wifi module, battery capacity and type, and other valuable information is not determined. Speculations have come up that if the new Surface model sporting a 10th gen processor has to be budget-oriented than Microsoft has to make some sacrifices in other departments.

Microsoft Surface models have always been performance-oriented laptops and are best suited for professional office workers. A budget-oriented laptop of this series is sure to improve the sales market of the market.

Whether the new surface model will appeal to the buyers, only can be determined after the complete spec reveals the product.

Google is turning Android phones into an Earthquake detection device

Earthquakes have become more frequent these days. No matter what people might say regarding climate change, the fact remains that the earth’s environment is undergoing drastic changes.

But unfortunately, most warning systems which claim to predict earthquake accurately have a limited reach. The main problem with these systems is their reliance on local sensors, seismic stations, and local communication networks. This results in a delay in transmitting information which may very make a difference between life and death.

Google has provided a simple yet a novel solution to this problem.

“An Android phone-powered earthquake alert system”

Almost all Android phones have potential sensors inside them. This stores data which can be used in detecting potential earthquakes as they happen. The accelerometer in android phones when paired with location data has the ability to detect the P-wave which is the first wave of an earthquake.

How does the system works

The Android phone when it detects something that it may be an earthquake. It sends that signal to google’s earthquake detection server’s, along with the carse location of where the shaking occurred. The servers then combine information from various Android phones around the area to determine whether an actual earthquake has taken place.

Over the coming years, Google is planning to sent real-time notifications. The areas which do not have a ground system of seismometers are the company’s primary targets.

Earlier, Google integrated its early warning Shake-Alert system from California and the United States Geological Survey. It successfully fired an “Earthquake nearby” notification for the 19th September California earthquake. The notification tells the user’s to “expect shaking” and also how far the tremor is, as well as the magnitude of the earthquake.

Tapping on the notification also offers a card-based feed of useful information like safety tips. Additionally, it also provides a map with information about your location from the epicenter.

This feature could make a life and death difference in the coming future. Google is planning to implement this feature globally in the coming year. It will set a new era in the global usage of the smartphone.
