A quick overview of the 2020-2021 NBA season

0

Due to the unfortunate circumstances of the spread of the coronavirus, a lot of things have been looking a bit different than usual. We already saw how the coronavirus had an impact on the league, with the league going on a 4-5 month of hiatus because of it.

We got to see the NBA ‘Bubble’ at Orlando earlier this year, a bio-bubble environment created by the NBA to complete the season. Well, the league wasn’t the way we were used to seeing it. No fans, social distancing, staffs wearing masks, the arena was all new to us.

As the 2020-2021 NBA season is on its way, we have a quick overview of the upcoming NBA season.

The regular NBA season usually starts in October, but this year the season will start on 22nd December. Each team will be playing 72 regular-season games, instead of the traditional 81 regular-season games. The league has condensed the schedule in order to finish the season in time for the 2021-2022 NBA season.

Usually, there is a longer offseason period. But for teams like Lakers, Heat, Celtics and Nuggets, who had deep playoffs run, they will be receiving only 8-9 weeks of offseason to gear up for the season. This is has resulted in many players throughout the league to miss a few matches at the start of the season, for some reason or another.

One of the most important thing for the association is to fight coronavirus while organising an, as normal as possible, league. The association has released a 134-pages guideline to teams which have to be followed strictly and at all times. Just the way, the NBA had an anonymous hotline to report potential violations of safety protocols, there will be a similar type of hotline during the continuity of the whole season. Teams travelling parties will be limited to 45 people, including 17 players.

One of the good things this season is that we get to see home and away action. Teams will play matches in their arenas and not in any kind of bubble. The season is expected to start on 22nd December and will go on till 5th March 2021. March 5th-10th will be the All-Star break, with the resumption of the league from May 11th.

There will be a play-in tournament for the 7th and 8th seed spot, a fight between the 7th to 10th seed teams, to enter the playoffs. This play-in tournament will be played between 18th May-21st May. The playoffs are expected to start by 22nd May and the season is expected to be concluded by 22nd July.

Even though this year is different from a normal season, one thing is guaranteed that this will be an exciting and fun season to watch and a challenging one for the players.

Facebook and Google are going to face new antitrust lawsuits in the US

0

Big Techs are facing issues with antitrust authorities in the United States. WSJ has recently reported that federal and state antitrust authorities of the US are going to file new lawsuits against Google and Facebook, the two leading techs.

As per the report, both the tech companies are facing four more cases. It is assumed that these cases will get filed by the end of January 2021. Just a few weeks before the Justice Department filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google.

Seeing the new legal troubles for the companies, the officials are probing both Facebook and Google proclaiming that they have misused their position in the industry to dominate the Social Media, Search, and Advertising sectors.

In the United States, it will be the first time that Facebook will face an antitrust lawsuit. However, both Google and Facebook have denied doing so and stated that they are offering most of their service for free which benefits the customer, being in a highly competitive market.

Amazon, Google, Apple, and Facebook all these big four companies had faced a congressional panel this year and all four are now under scrutiny by the antitrust officials. It is assumed by seeing the report that this month, FTC is going to file its case against Facebook. Meanwhile, in the coming days, we could see filing another case against the social media giants from a coalition of the state attorney general.

Will India manage to win the third ODI or will the Aussies whitewash the series?

0

After India’s twin losses at the Sydney Cricket Ground, there is one match left for them to protect a tiny bit of their integrity. Apart from the hosts creating new records and India’s improved batting performance in the second ODI, there was not much to differentiate between the opening two fixtures of India’s 2020-21 tour of Australia.

As Australia made their highest ODI total against India, India’s improvement in the batting department was overshadowed by a more inferior bowling display. During this, they handed captain Virat Kohli his third successive series loss across formats.

The third ODI will be played on December 2 at the Manuka Oval in Canberra, as will the first two T20s.

Some of the reasons why the hosts could embarrass the Indians so easily was because India has been absent from international cricket for a longer time than the Australians who defeated England 2-1 in an ODI series, just before the start of the Indian Premier League.

Another reason for India’s huge loss was the absence of hitman Rohit Sharma. Chasing targets like 375 and 390, India would need a huge boost from the opening batsmen. Who better than the man with three ODI double centuries to open in India’s batting lineup. Replacing him is youngster Mayank Agarwal who hasn’t quite fulfilled his role stepping in for the Indian veteran.

India’s top scorers – Virat Kohli and KL Rahul – consumed a lot more dot balls than the Aussies who were regularly rotating strike, navigating gaps and hitting the occasional boundaries.

Had the Indian bowlers been more careful, there might have been level competition. Hardik Pandya, who is still recovering from his back injury, bowled four overs and dismissed Steve Smith for 104. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal also conceded the most number of runs ever by an Indian spinner in an ODI, breaking his own record by giving away 89 crucial runs.

It will be a good opportunity for India to allow players like T Natarajan, Manish Pandey and Kuldeep Yadav to showcase their talents ahead of the three-match T20 series. Unless India puts up a mammoth total batting first and the bowlers manage to pick up wickets early on, Australia is all set to whitewash India in this ODI bilateral series in their home ground for the first time in the history of the game.
