VAR finally does justice to its implementation in Liverpool vs Wolves match

Liverpool managed to beat Wolves 4-0 at Anfield, with the fans returning to watch their team in action. While the fact that actual people returned to the stands was definitely one of the best things about the match, there was another positive to the game.

VAR has been the subject of mass criticism in the Premier League, especially after many controversial decisions. However, last night was a great example of how technology can be used in a positive fashion.

Sadio Mane tackled Wolves skipper Connor Coady in the Liverpool box shortly after Salah opened the scoring. As one can assume, the Englishman went down and the referee pointed to the spot.

The incident was then looked at using VAR, as is the case with all penalties. Shortly after, the decision was reversed as the replay clearly showed Mane pulling out of the tackle and Coady diving in the box to get the spot-kick in favour of his team.

The on-field referee was in charge of overturning the decision after VAR advised him to have a look for himself. Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch applauded the correct decision made by the on-field referee, saying:

“VAR has worked like a dream tonight. When it happens in real-time I thought “penalty” as most people did but Mane pulls out of it.”

“The reaction of the Liverpool players (says it all), the fans were incensed. Conor Coady looked a bit sheepish and the correct decision was made.”

Liverpool went on to dominate the game, and ended the match 4-0. Salah, Wijnaldum and Matip scored for the Champions, whereas Nelson Semedo scored an own goal in the 78th minute.

After losing Raul Jimenez to the freak injury last week, Wolves must find a way to retain composure and get the best out of their upcoming fixtures.

With the growing demand for high-performing, the requirements for high-speed data connectivity has also increased. According to recent reports, Nokia and ZTE, which are two main partners of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), are set to lose fourth-generation or 4G network migration. Reports indicate that the public and private system integrators of India will depend on homegrown vendors as a part of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative.

According to sources, Telecommunications Consultants India (TCIL) and Indian Telephone Industries (ITIL), and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and Tech Mahindra, are all eying to bid for the BSNL’s much-awaited 4G gear suppl. Reports also indicate that they are also in ‘advanced discussions’ with multiple domestic stakeholders, including gear makers and innovative startups as consortium partners to build an indigenous next-generation telecom infrastructure.

“We are looking this (BSNL deployment) as a potential opportunity, and will duly submit our proposals as and when the telco comes out with a tender document, and are already in talks with a few local equipment makers to board them for the supply, deployment, and maintenance of BSNL’s 4G network.”

According to sources, BSNL will be deploying 7,000 new 5G-ready sites on TDD while aiming to upgrade 49,300 2G and 3G sites on the FDD platform. BSNL had to scrap the request for proposal (RFP), following stiff opposition from the local telecom firms and suppliers due to alleged restrictive terms. But the businesses are worried about cutting their ties with the likes of ZTE and Nokia and venture with the local vendors as this has never been done before in the country.

“A chance to domestic companies in BSNL’s 4G network should be given. Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured (IDDM) products should get preference; otherwise, the core will still end up being coded and controlled by foreign entities even if the equipment is technically made in India.”

We have seen a lot of leaks and rumours online regarding intel’s upcoming CPUs. Still, recently it’s Tiger Lake-H, which is a high-end mobility CPU, has made its appearance in ASUS’s upcoming TUF gaming laptop. The device was spotted to be powered by a Core i7-11370H processor. According to sources, two ASUS TUF Gaming and a single ASUS Zenbook variant listed with Intel’s Core i7-11370H Tiger Lake CPU.

The included models were ASUS TUF Gaming FX516PM-I716512W0T, TUF Gaming FX516PR-HN002T, and the ASUS Zenbook UX564PH. But according to reports, only the ASUS TUF Gaming FX516PM-I716512W0T comes with the GeForce RTX 3060 6 GB graphics card.

Sports Illustrated announced five athletes as winners for their annual Sportsperson of the Year award.

Part of the five “activist athletes” who received the honour are the two reigning Finals MVPs of the NBA and WNBA LeBron James and Breanna Stewart respectively. They join Naomi Osaka, Patrick Mahomes, and Laurent Duvernay-Tardiff as 2020’s award winners.

Having previously won it in 2012 and 2016, LeBron James, who led the work in fighting voter suppression while leading the Los Angeles Lakers to the 2020 NBA championship as the Finals MVP, becomes the first athlete ever to win Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year award more than two times.

On his way to leading the Lakers to 2020 NBA title, he averaged 29.8 points, 11.8 rebounds and 8.5 assists per game and went on to be named the 2020 Finals MVP. Receiving that honour he became the first player in NBA’s history to win the Finals MVP trophy with three different organizations.

Other than his on-court success, James was part of a leadership group consisting only of Black athletes and artists that advocated the ‘More Than A Vote’ campaign, an initiative that worked to end voter suppression during the 2020 United States Presidential election. He worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone, especially African-Americans, has access to the election polls.

On the other hand, Breanna Stewart, who led the Seattle Storm to the 2020 WNBA championship after bouncing back from an Achilles injury, led from the front with her constant support for the Black Lives Matter movement all through the 2020 WNBA season.

Trail Blazers to close practice facility following 3 positive COVID-19 cases

On Sunday afternoon, the Portland Trail Blazers announced that they will be closing their practice facility after three members of the franchise tested positive for the coronavirus. Around the NBA, training camps started around December 1. The league gears up to start the 2020-21 season on December 22nd, but with added health and safety protocols in position because of the prevalent COVID-19 pandemic.

On returning to their home markets, all NBA players were tested to start training camp and the upcoming season. 48 out of 546 players tested positive. The Trail Blazers are the first team to shut their practice facility after positive tests, whereas the Golden State Warriors delayed the start of their training camp this week after two members tested positive for COVID-19.

Regarding the positive tests, the Trail Blazers issued the following statement:

“Over the past four days, we have had three positive COVID test results within our organization. Out of an abundance of caution, having completed contact tracing, we are closing our practice facility today for deep cleaning while we run confirmatory tests.”

The league shared more health and safety protocols earlier this week that every team has to follow when the season starts. The NBA has also sent out a warning to every team stating that if the outlined protocols are not followed, there will be severe punishments for players and franchises, including suspensions, fines, adjustment or loss of draft choices and forfeited games. Players could see reduced paychecks if they do not follow the rules laid out by the NBA. Visiting bars, lounges, clubs, live entertainment venues, public gyms, pools and spas and large indoor gatherings, among other things, are prohibited.

Unlike the bubble experiment that NBA conducted in Orlando to finish the remainder of the 2019-20 season, the league is stepping into uncharted territory by playing games in home markets and having teams travel to various cities to compete. Thus, the stakes are much higher and players, coaches and staff personnel must be held to an even higher standard in order to complete the upcoming season safely.
