IPL 2020: Ravichandran Ashwin jokingly issues the last warning before Mankading

Ravichandran Ashwin has had enough of batsmen staying out of their crease at the non-striker’s end!

Match 19 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) featured a clash of two of the strongest teams of the season as Delhi Capitals took on Royal Challengers Bangalore. Ashwin, who was sidelined due to a shoulder dislocation, made his much-anticipated comeback.

While bowling, he was encountered by a situation that seemed familiar. RCB’s Aaron Finch had walked way out of his crease before a ball was bowled. Ashwin, however, did not do the ‘Mankad’ and allowed him to return back to the crease. The whole incident had Delhi Capitals’ coach Ricky Ponting laughing out loud as well. Before the start of the season, he had a word with Ashwin to not use Mankad’ as a mode of dismissal.

Ashwin used the Mankad technique in last season to dismiss Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler back to the pavilion. The incident had sparked a debate on whether the method is in the spirit of the game or not. It also led to some animosity between Ashwin and Buttler. Ashwin took to social media to make a lighthearted tweet about the same.

“Let’s make it clear !! First and final warning for 2020. I am making it official and don’t blame me later on. @RickyPonting #runout #nonstriker @AaronFinch5 and I are good buddies btw. #IPL2020,”

Ashwin’s ‘Mankading’ incident with Buttler

Ashwin used the Mankad technique in last season to dismiss Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler back to the pavilion. The incident attracted mixed yet heated interactions across the cricketing community.

One of the greatest spinners of all time, Shane Warne, strongly condemned Ashwin and the act. He called the act ‘simply disgraceful’ and claimed that the off-spinner will be known for this ‘low act’.

However, others like the late and great Dean Jones supported Ashwin claiming that he was just following the rules of the sport.

What is ‘Mankading’?

‘Mankading’ is a term actually named after Indian cricketer Vinoo Mankad. Back in 1947, Mankad dismissed Australian batsman Bill Brown not once but twice by removing the bails when he was out of the crease at the non-striker’s end. Mankad faced criticism back then as well. However, he got support from the legend, none other than, Sir Don Bradman.

Bradman has written in his autobiography, “For the life of me, I can’t understand why [the press] questioned his sportsmanship. The laws of cricket make it quite clear that the non-striker must keep within his ground until the ball has been delivered. If not, why is the provision there which enables the bowler to run him out? By backing up too far or too early, the non-striker is very obviously gaining an unfair advantage.”

Next-gen Apple HomePods will be powered by A10 chip while AirPower to be powered by A11

0

The Cupertino giant looks forward to updating its entire product lineup in the coming months, and we have already received the list of it. Now, the leaks from the reliable Apple tipster Komiya suggests the fact that the new Apple products will be powerful indeed.

Using its own chips, Apple has always brought great performance and have helped itself to customize its own products for its consumers. That’s why it has always utilized every last bit of their hardware on their variety of products.

Seems like, this time too, Apple will be maximizing the most out of their old, yet capable A10 and A11 chips as both of them will be powering the next-gen HomePods and AirPower respectively. While this will be the 2nd generation HomePod, the AirPower will totally be a new product from Apple.

The original AirPower was announced back in 2017 to help people wirelessly charge their iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods simultaneously. However, their ambitious placement of the power coils led the accessory to overheat, which ultimately led Apple to cancel the accessory in 2019.

Although we might actually see an AirPower Mini alongside new iPhones this month, the original AirPower is not off yet. Interestingly a powerful A11 chip will be powering the device to ultimately help Apple overcome the problems.

Nvidia Maxine platform uses AI to enhance video conferencing

0

In the current pandemic world, Work From Home (WFH) has become the new norm of society. With people spending most of their time completing projects and collaborating with their team members virtually.

Demand for video conferencing platforms has seen a sudden growth in their market value. With services like Zoom and Google Meet receiving increased popularity, it looks like the video conferencing services are likely to grow even further.

But video conferencing has its fair share of troubles.

Yep, we all experienced it. Be it attending online classes, collaborating with your colleagues, or attending an important interview. It is tough to expect high-quality video output from so many platforms out there.

But the problem is not just related to software. For software to work efficiently, it requires the support of equal quality hardware. This is something most of us don’t have. Thus we end compromising in our day to day video meetings.

But things are on the verge of change.

Nvidia announced its new videoconferencing platform for the developers. Namely, the ‘Nvidia Maxine’, the platform is claimed to be able to fix the most common problems in video calls, while improving the overall quality of the videos.

How does the new tech work?

The platform will process call in the cloud which using the company’s own GPU’s and boosts call in numerous ways using the support of Artificial Intelligence. The role of AI in Maxine will be to realign caller’s faces and gazes so that they’re always looking directly at their camera.

Maxine can also reduce bandwidth requirement for the videos “down to one-tenth of the requirements of the H.264 streaming video compression standard”. It does this by only transmitting “key facial points”. It also offers features like face re-lighting, real-time translation, and also transcription and animated avatars.

Nvidia’s general manager for media and entertainment Richard Kerris stated, “We’ve all experienced times where bandwidth has been a limitation in our conferencing we’re doing daily these days, if we apply AI to this problem we can reconstruct the difference scenes on both ends and only transmit what needs to transmit, and thereby reducing that bandwidth significantly.”

Nvidia compression feature uses an Artificial Intelligence method known as ‘generative adversarial networks’ or GANs that partially reconstruct callers’ faces in the cloud.

Nvidia in its blog posted, “Instead of streaming the entire screen of pixels, the AI software analyzes the key facial points of each person on a call and then intelligently re-animates the face in the video on the other side. this makes it possible to stream video with far less data flowing back and forth across the internet.” This technique is the same one used in many deepfakes.

The company is no doubt hoping its cloud computing and impressive AI R&D work will help it rise above its competitors in the market. The real test, however, lies in the company convincing the established video conferencing companies to adopt Nvidia’s technology.

Nvidia’s Maxine is a toolkit for third-party firms to improve their software. So far, the company has only announced its partnership with the communications firm Avaya, which will be using select features of Maxine.

Nvidia’s latest announcement shows us that the future of videoconferencing will be more Artificial Intelligence Oriented.
