5G to roll out in India by early-2022 after another round of spectrum auction

0

Where most of the other countries in the world are using 5G connectivity and have started working on 6G, India is still fighting with its infrastructure to roll out 5G. However, the Indian Government expects that the 5G services may roll-out in India in early 2022. As per reports tabled in Parliament on Monday, after six months, another round of spectrum auction is planned to get placed.

Moreover, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has been pulled up by the Standing Committee on Information Technology for the delay in the launch of 5G services whereas most of the other countries are currently enjoying the benefits of the 5G network. The auction of the spectrum will worth Rs 3.92 lakh crore from March 1, as per the announcement by the telecom ministry. But, unfortunately, it doesn’t include the desired frequency band for hazard-free 5G services.

As of now, it is also not confirmed by which time normal people will get their first 5G SIM in hand as it is said that the 5G is expected to roll-out in India by the end of the calendar year 2021 or beginning of 2022, but in some specific uses. It looks like the current 4G connectivity will continue in India for at least another 5-6 years (reports came from Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor, head of the parliamentary panel).

“From the foregoing, the committee is inclined to conclude that sufficient preparatory work has not been undertaken for launching 5G services in India. As such, India has not moved beyond the modest beginning stage as compared to other countries in the world,” the report said.

“So, it is likely that after missing the 2G, 3G, and 4G bus, India is going to miss 5G opportunities, unless time-bound action is taken in core areas where governmental intervention is required,” the report added.

“It is disappointing to note that the department (DoT) has hardly learned from the past delays as the vision for 5G, which was reflected in the constitution of the high-level forum and expert committees, has not been transformed into action on the ground and is not reflected in the policies formulated by the government,” the report further added.

Disney, NHL reach Seven-Year Multi-Platform Broadcast Agreement

0

Disney and the National Hockey League (NHL) have just signed a massive new TV rights deal for the next seven years, starting with the upcoming 2021-2022 season. The deal will see ESPN and ESPN Plus become key places to watch and stream hockey games.

Since ESPN’s previous deal with the NHL expired in 2005, this is the first time that it will offer NHL games, and this time streaming is a huge part of that deal — particularly, ESPN Plus streaming.

NHL.TV is effectively being replaced by ESPN Plus as the NHL’s out-of-market streaming service. There will be over 1,000 games each season available for the fans to stream. ESPN and the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) will also get 25 exclusive national regular-season games each season, while ESPN Plus and Hulu will give exclusive access to 75 games a year.

Additionally, for four of the seven years, ABC will get exclusive rights to the Stanley Cup Final with the option to simultaneously broadcast those finals games on ESPN Plus and other linear ESPN networks. Furthermore, ESPN and ABC will get to broadcast together half of the NHL playoffs each season, too. (Specifically, Disney’s networks will get one of the Conference Final series and half of all the first-round and second-round games each year.)

When it comes to offering live sports from one of the major North American leagues, This new NHL deal marks one of the biggest expansions for ESPN Plus. For hockey fans across the U.S., it is now a must-have service. Thanks to the exclusive broadcast of 75 games on Hulu and ESPN Plus, the NHL deal will offer a new wave of live sports on Hulu (which will be available to all unlike the other ESPN Plus games Hulu subscribers whether they subscribe to ESPN Plus or not).

According to a report by The Verge, this new deal comes just as “Disney is rolling out a larger integration for ESPN Plus subscribers to be able to access that additional sports content within Hulu itself, which should help make it even easier for subscribers of both of those services to find the newly added NHL games when they debut this fall.”

At $5.99 per month, you can subscribe to ESPN Plus alone, or you can bundle it alongside Hulu with ads and Disney Plus for $13.99 per month.

Disney Plus officially surpasses 100 million subscribers

According to recent reports, the Disney Plus streaming service has officially surpassed 100 million subscribers. It is a big accomplishment considering that the service was just launched less than a year and a half ago.

The report was announced during the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting. Just earlier in February, the company has announced that it had a little over 94 million subscribers as of January 2nd, 2021.

It is estimated that shows like WandaVision and Raya the Last Dragon helped the platform score high. The next big series for Disney Plus is The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, out on March 19th.

“The enormous success of Disney Plus … has inspired us to be even more ambitious and to significantly increase our investment in the development of high-quality content. We set a target of [more than] 100 new titles per year, and this includes Disney Animation, Disney Live-Action, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic.”

Originally, the company’s executives believed that the service would eventually amass between 60 and 90 million subscribers by 2024. But, now seeing the platform’s performance and impressed by its success, Disney executives state that now the target is between 300 and 350 million subscribers across all of its streaming platforms (Disney Plus, Hulu, ESPN Plus, Star Plus, HotStar) by 2024.

To continue the growth of its subscriber base, Disney’s “direct-to-consumer business is the company’s top priority, and our robust pipeline of content will continue to fuel its growth” is in the works. The platform will bring several series from every major franchise and brand in development, and it seems likely more mid-tier films (movies that aren’t on the same level as Star Wars, Marvel, or Frozen) will migrate to Disney Plus.

Robinho gets a 9-year jail sentence

0

The Milan Court of Appeal confirmed a nine-year sentence for former AC Milan and Real Madrid forward Robinho. The Brazilian has been found guilty of “belittling” and “brutally humiliating” a 23-year-old woman whom he raped in 2013.

The former footballer was found guilty of the accused crimes in 2017, and now has 45 days to appeal to the court regarding their judgment. Robinho has been sentenced alongside his friend, Ricardo Falco.

The court has ruled that Falco was trying to mislead the investigation by providing the investigators with a false version of the events that took place. The incident took place at a well-known Milan pub, and the victim was celebrating her 23rd birthday.

Robinho, in October of 2020, rejoined his boyhood club Santos. However, the player had his contract terminated with the club only four days after the deal’s announcement due to mass public outcry regarding Santos’s decision. Moreover, one of their sponsors also decided to end their deal with the club due to Robinho’s signing out of “respect for women” and his pathetic attitude towards them.

Earlier, the crucial evidence used to convict the Brazilian in the year 2020 consisted of intercepted phone calls and messages between Robinho and those allegedly involved in the alleged gang rape in which the footballer allegedly said ‘the woman was completely drunk.’

Erling Haaland’s stats show his greatness even at 20

0

Erling Haaland managed to fire Borussia Dortmund into the quarter-finals of the 20-21 Champions League. The Black and Yellow club drew the second leg but won the fixture over the two meetings.

The officiating caused Erling Haaland to score the second goal of the match after three attempts. The first was ruled out, and the subsequent check caused the on-field referee to check a foul against Haaland, resulting in the hosts being given a penalty.

Haaland replaced Reus as the penalty taker due to him losing out on the goal he just scored. Bono saved the first attempt from Haaland, but the keeper stepped off his line to stop the shot. It hence had to be retaken, and the Norwegian made no mistake the second time around.

The 20-year-old is now the youngest player in the sport’s history to have scored 20 Champions League goals. For the sake of comparison, it took the top scorers in the competition, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, 40 & 56 games to reach the same figure. On the other hand, Robert Lewandowski achieved the same feat in 36 games. Haaland took fourteen games across two seasons to do so.

Stats show that Haaland scores every 52 minutes, and considering the form that he has been showing ever since bursting onto the scene with RB Salzburg, there seems to be no stopping him at all. While it is still very early in his career, he has all the tools to potentially go down as the best striker in the sport’s history.

Qualcomm working on its SC8280 which will rival Apple’s M1

The launch of Apple’s M1 has rattled the Silicon industry, and most analysts predict that the company could very well turn out to become one of the biggest rivals of AMD and Intel. Earlier, we heard that Qualcomm was testing its SC8280, which would power future Windows 10 notebooks. The rumored SC8280 is reported to be the competitor of Apple’s M1.

Earlier, not much was made public about the chip, but now reports indicate that the chipset could be the first where Qualcomm moves away from a combination of high-performing and energy-efficient cores. Sources claim that Qualcomm might be aiming at high-performance cores running at different clock speeds. Source also reports that the Snapdragon SC8280 is currently being tested with four Gold+ and four Gold cores.

Qualcomm’s earlier released Snapdragon 8cx lost to M1 with a huge margin. Even though M1 was running Windows in virtualization mode, its performance gets reduced by quite a margin; it’s pretty shameful for Qualcomm. With its new chip, Qualcomm needs to match M1 in performance to save some face. The Gold+ cores are reported to be running at 2.70GHz, while the Gold cores are operating at 2.43GHz.

Qualcomm’s new upcoming competitor for M1 has an integrated NPU. It will be able to work up to 15 TOPs. We can confirm that the machines used by Qualcomm for testing feature 32GB of RAM and 14-inch displays, suggesting portable notebooks will be running this silicon.

So, let’s hope we get to see something exciting from Qualcomm, and it will be interesting to see the chip battle it out with Apple’s M1. We also know that Apple is working on M1’s successor and that chip is expected to make its way to the market by the end of 2021.

Apple to invest 1 billion Euros over three years for Silicon Design Center in Munich, Germany

Apple Inc. said it’s planning to establish a new European semiconductor design center in Munich, Germany, as part of a 1 billion-euro ($1.2 billion) investment push over the next three years to expand its team there and develop custom chips for 5G mobile and other wireless technologies.

In an announcement on Wednesday, Apple said it plans to move into the 30,000-square-meter (98,400-square-foot) facility near central Munich in late 2022. It will be Apple’s largest R&D site for mobile wireless semiconductors and software and it plans to hire hundreds of people. Like all of the company’s offices globally, the Munich design center will run entirely on 100 percent renewable energy.

“I couldn’t be more excited for everything our Munich engineering teams will discover — from exploring the new frontiers of 5G technology to a new generation of technologies that bring power, speed, and connectivity to the world,” Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said in a statement according to Apple Insider. “Munich has been a home to Apple for four decades, and we’re grateful to this community and to Germany for being a part of our journey,” he added.

The area around the Bavarian capital is a hub for chip development, with one of Europe’s major semiconductor-based technology research institutes, the Fraunhofer Group for Microelectronics present there and also] longtime Apple partner Infineon Technologies AG located in the region.

The company has been developing its own semiconductors so it does not have to outsource the technology that runs its smartphones, laptops, and tablets. According to a report by Bloomberg, “Last year, it said it will develop its own cellular modem, potentially displacing supplier Qualcomm Inc. for the technology that lets iPhones connect to the web, access apps and make phone calls.”

Last year, due to the pandemic, companies underestimated consumer demand, which created a shortage of semiconductors. These supply chains are difficult to adjust quickly and several industries have been hit.

The European Union outlined the digital goals for the bloc and kicked off a program this week to produce its own advanced semiconductors by 2030. Its aim is to account for at least 20% of the world’s chips by value and to create technology more advanced than those made by leaders of the chipmaking industry like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and Samsung Electronics Co.

Nintendo reportedly working on a powerful Switch model

In the market for handheld gaming devices, it is completely evident that Nintendo is the undisputed champion amongst all. Though we have seen startups like Aya, launching their Neo product with success, and also we have heard that Microsoft is working on a portable machine.

But, the fact remains that Nintendo is the undisputed champion in the market. We have long heard the reports that Nintendo submitted a revised Switch model to the FCC. But, recently, we have started hearing rumors about Nintendo working on a more powerful version of its Switch.

According to sources, NVIDIA will soon stop producing the Tegra X1 ‘Mariko’, which Nintendo uses in the Switch and the Switch Lite. So, if the recent reports are to be believed, Nintendo plans to equip a new Switch to a 7-inch OLED display, which would be quite the upgrade from the 6.2-inch IPS displays found in the current Switch and Switch Lite.

The unavailability of the Tegra X1 ‘Mariko’ implies that Nintendo would need to revise both the Switch and the Switch Lite. The new Switch might also be equipped with an OLED display to run at 720p, not 1080p.

According to the rumors going around, the new Switch will be a more powerful version of the current console rather than a next-generation model. If a Switch Pro or Super Switch comes to market this year, then we doubt that Nintendo will release a next-generation console for at least another couple of years.
