SK Hynix CEO suggests a merger between RAM and CPUs

The RAM standards, later this year, are transitioning to the DDR5 era that brings improvements and considerable performance boost compared to DDR4. However, DDR (Double Data Rate) and its faster GDDR (Graphics Double Data Rate) relative are not really that fast compared to the HBM (Hgh-Bandwidth Memory) standard, which, according to Seok-Hee Lee, Chief Executive Officer of SK Hynix, could be the foundation for the natural merger between CPUs and RAM.

At the International Reliability Physics Symposium of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), Lee presented his vision for a faster memory standard that would require a “convergence of memory and logic.” He presented a more gradual evolution starting with HBM:

“As the speed was increased in high-bandwidth memory by increasing the number of channels between the CPU and the memory, the speed will increase further in Processing Near Memory (PNM), where both the CPU and the memory exist within a single module. The speed will further increase in Processing In Memory (PIM), where the CPU and the memory exist within a single package. Ultimately, speed will increase further in Computing in Memory(CIM), where the CPU and the memory is integrated within a single die, to deliver high-performance computing system.”

The South Korean memory semiconductor supplier, SK Hynix, is currently the second-largest memory maker in the world, but any other type of chips like CPUs are not manufactured by the company. Thus, CEO Lee calls for a “strategic partnership” between semiconductor giants in order to form an ecosystem that can sustain the new CPU+RAM hybrids and “shape a new era, which pursues both economic and social value.”

Lee also presented a new standard called Compute Express Link (CXL) that could complement the PCIe bus (high-speed serial computer expansion bus standard). The CXL memory has the capability of moving data faster and in a more systematic manner between CPU and graphics / compute accelerators or smart network interfaces.

“CXL memory is being prepared as a solution that not only expands bandwidth and capacity but also realizes the value of a persistent memory, […] a solution to narrow the gap between the memory performance and the industry requirements.”

Last but not least, Lee mentioned the efforts that are being made to improve the NAND memory chips(a type of nonvolatile storage technology that does not require power to retain data) integrated into SSD storage solutions. With the jump to 10 nm nodes and below, the Icheon-based company may eventually be able to produce 600-layer NAND chips, which should greatly increase storage capacity and data transfer speeds over the current 176-layer cap.

Intel’s upcoming flagship Core i9-11900K processor unboxed already before launch

A few days back, Intel did officially announce their Rocket Lake-S desktop CPU lineup and disclosed the entire pricing as well. Obviously, even before launch, we did get the specs as well as the look of the packaging thanks to Videocardz.

Even though the sale embargo lifts on March 30th. however, a YouTuber Vassi Tech has already received the Intel Core i9-11900K CPU that he preordered ahead of the official launch. So, the retail unit that was sent to Vassi has been delivered a week in advance and he did end up showing the CPU and its fancy packaging in a YouTube video.

The unique packaging for the unlocked series sports a plastic, crystal-shaped box. As we already know, the Intel Core i9-11900K features 8 cores and 16 threads, which will result in an L3 cache of 16MB and an L2 cache of 4MB. The base frequency of the CPU is 3.5 GHz, but it is able to feature a maximum boost clock of 5.2 GHz while the all-core boost frequency will be limited to 4.8 GHz.

The processor will also house exactly 20 lanes of PCIe 4.0 and will also have native support for DDR4-3200 RAM without overclocking the IMC. Intel did evetually somehow beat AMD in single-core performance that will give few minor advantages over AMD, whose Ryzen 5000 series processors are far more efficient and better in multi-threaded performance.

New Nintendo Switch will have DLSS support for 4K Visuals in TV mode

The rumored Nintendo Switch Pro model will use the latest chip from NVIDIA, having Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) support for 4K gaming in docked mode.

For now, that’s what Bloomberg is reporting, according to the sources familiar with the matter. In addition to supporting the AI rendering technique of NVIDIA to allow the visuals to be upscaled to 4K resolution while playing in the TV mode, the new Switch model is also said to feature an upgraded CPU and increased memory.

“DLSS support will require new code to be added to games, so it’ll primarily be used to improve graphics on upcoming titles, said the people, including multiple game developers”, the Bloomberg report reads. This can be related to the recent rumors which claim there will be a selected amount of titles exclusive to the brand-new Nintendo Switch Model.

“There will be some select exclusives, especially from third-party partners,” the ResetEra insider NateDrake wrote earlier this month, thereby another ResetEra user who give back up by saying that there will be exclusives for the Switch Pro. He added, “may not be a big number of them, but I know of at least one.”

Bloomberg wrote earlier this month that the rumored new model would feature a 7-inch 720p Samsung OLED display. “Nintendo decided to go with rigid OLED panels for the new model, the people said, a cheaper but less flexible alternative to the type commonly used for high-end smartphones,” Bloomberg wrote. “The latest model will also come with 4K ultra-high-definition graphics when paired with TVs, they said. That could intensify a longstanding complaint of developers, who have struggled with the difference in resolution between handheld and TV modes and now face a bigger gap between the two.”

According to Bloomberg, Nintendo might release the Switch model at the end of this year. It could have a price tag between $349 and $399.

Take-Two Interactive acquires HookBang to bolster game development

Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., in an NBA 2K update statement, revealed on their website that they have acquired Austin, Texas-based HookBang LLC, a studio and partner on the latest edition of the company’s NBA 2K series, bolstering a key franchise for the video-game giant. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquired studio “will operate from a to-be-announced new location in the Austin, Texas metropolitan area” that will employ hundreds of staffers focused on platform development and live-services support for the NBA game. Last week, an exclusive, long-term partnership was signed by Take-Two for golf games with Tiger Woods.

“We build interactive amusement parks,” David Ismailer, president of 2K, said in an interview, according to Bloomberg. “Any time I can add developer resources to create a new ride, we take the opportunity to do that.”

“Stay tuned for more announcements from us,” Ismailer said. “We are always looking for development talent.”

Founded in 2012 as a solutions-based collective of engineers, HookBang has been working with 2K’s Visual Concepts to provide art, design, and engineering support for NBA 2K21. HookBang will become part of Visual Concepts under the new name of Visual Concepts Austin.

“Working with a studio as prominent as Visual Concepts on NBA 2K21 was an extraordinary opportunity for HookBang,” said Frank Roan, CEO at HookBang. “Formally joining Visual Concepts and 2K allows us to accelerate our impact on the product, the company, and the Austin development community.”

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the introduction of new gaming consoles such as Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X last year, Take-Two and other game publishers have been enjoying a major revenue surge, leading to more hiring and acquisitions. Take-Two also had plans to acquire the racing-game developer Codemasters and made attempts as well, however, that company eventually went to Electronic Arts Inc.
