Infantino: Football will play a central role in bringing communities together

0

FIFA has recently built alliances with a number of United Nations agencies for the realisation of social development objectives

ZURICH, Switzerland, April 6, 2021/ — On 6 April, the United Nations celebrates the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, recognising the role that sport and physical activity plays in communities and in people’s lives across the world.

The occasion holds special resonance this year as the world seeks to recover from the devastation wreaked by the COVID-19 pandemic, with sport sure to play a crucial role in that effort.

To mark this important date in the calendar, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has written the following article in the UN Chronicle in which he details how FIFA and its many programmes remain “at the service of society” in this time of global need.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been an unprecedented time of distress and loss for the whole world. Foremost is the tragic loss of loved ones that so many have suffered. We have also largely lost our social lives and human interaction, including everyday activities such as participating in, or attending, a football match.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel, and with the roll-out of vaccines, we hope life will return as it is meant to be lived: together, without the barriers and constraints imposed by the pandemic.

As it has done before, football, the most popular sport in the world, will play a central role in bringing communities together. Through football, we will be able to get back in shape physically, socialise with our teammates and rivals, and fill stadiums again. We will regain some of what was lost in the past year and hopefully bring back joy and smiles.

We also have a unique opportunity for a fresh start. Football can be a powerful tool for action on many pressing global issues, including several of the most important United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as those related to health and well-being (SDG 3), quality education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5), peace and conflict resolution (SDG 16).

fifa2 Infantino: Football will play a central role in bringing communities together

Football and the sport’s governing institution, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), have an unparalleled global reach. The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia was watched by more than half the world’s population, and the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 was seen by over 1 billion people. Such wide visibility provides our sport with a unique platform to promote the universal values of fair-play, inclusion, solidarity, diversity and teamwork, all critical to achieving the SDGs.

We are equally fortunate to be able to call on football stars – the FIFA Legends – who are living examples of those values. They generously use their own platforms to spread messages about important social issues and help us reach a much wider audience, beyond football fans.

Sports organisations themselves have their role to play and should lead by example by engaging in partnerships to contribute to the international development agenda. FIFA has recently built alliances with a number of United Nations agencies—notably with the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), UN-Women, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Food Programme (WFP)—for the realisation of social development objectives, including promoting healthy lifestyles, crime prevention, sports integrity, youth development, gender equality and women’s empowerment, as well as education.

Education is indeed central to our global efforts to create a better world. Thanks to the Football for Schools Programme, we are investing $120 million in the education, through football, of the world’s young people to help them develop key life skills. Delayed because of the pandemic, the Programme is expected to start operations fully in 2021, when it can also help address disruptions in education caused by COVID-19, especially in some of the most affected regions of the world.

FIFA is also leading the way to create safer sporting environments, putting in place safeguarding measures to protect children through the FIFA Guardians programme, which aims to professionalize the role of safeguarding officers in football.

Since we must work together with state and local authorities in this area we have entered into a memorandum of understanding signed last year with UNODC, aimed at potentially establishing an independent, multi-sport, multi-agency, international entity with the authority and experience to assist international sports and ensure that we work together with law enforcement agencies and governments to eradicate any form of abuse and investigate cases as appropriate.

As we continue to fight back against COVID-19 and its effects, we do so with the aim of not just helping football—as we have with an unprecedented support package of $1.5 billion for the game’s organisers around the world through the FIFA COVID-19 Relief Plan – but also society as a whole. From the moment the pandemic was declared, we, in collaboration with WHO, have contributed to vital public health messaging to promote safe hygiene practices aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19. We continue to collaborate closely with WHO and amplify messages that support good health and save lives.

Football and society have a symbiotic relationship: what is good for society is good for football and vice versa. On this International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (6 April 2021), FIFA is at the service of society, and we will continue to play any role we can in supporting the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rugby Africa’s North African Regional Development Officer, Mostafa Jelti, Speaks About International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

0

At the request of the Moroccan NOC, this day was created in 2013 by the United Nations General Assembly

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, April 6, 2021/ — Globally, sport has reached a stage of development that no other human activity can boast of. Its impact on societies and unifying power gives it the responsibility of putting itself at the service of peace

  1. To start off, what does international day of sports for development and peace mean to you?

At the request of the Moroccan NOC, this day was created in 2013 by the United Nations General Assembly. It reflects the importance of sports, which is present in every household with its economic, political, social and above all educational functions.

  1. What is Rugby Ready training? Please feel free to use any images and statistics as well.

The Rugby Ready program is a support and educational training tool, with its objective being to promote enjoyable and fun playing rugby while minimizing the risk of injury.

Player health is the priority at all levels of the game.

Rugby Ready is also a perfect complement to the programs set up by some World Rugby member unions, with Rugby Africa having very satisfactory numbers of participants – second World Rugby region.

  1. You deliver conferences on the theme of Sports and Peace. Please elaborate on the connection between sport and peace? Can you share examples where sport or more particularly rugby has been used to foster peace?

Globally, sport has reached a stage of development that no other human activity can boast of. Its impact on societies gives it an incomparable mobilization potential. This unifying power gives it the responsibility of putting itself at the service of peace.

For concrete examples, I will cite the following cases:

  • Fist Ping-pong diplomacy initiated in 1971 between China and the USA
  • The attribution of the 1988 Olympic Games to China (global symbolism)
  • The joint organization of the football world cup in Japan and South Korea (despite the historical disputes and the poisoned relations)
  • The (unsuccessful) joint candidacy of Turkey and Greece for the organization of the European Football Championship (UEFA 2008)

In rugby:

  • The organization of the 3rd Rugby World Cup in South Africa which has contributed to bringing together the entire population of the country.
  • The participation of the Libyan National Rugby Team in the Arab 7’S Championship (February 2021) where the team was made up of the 2 “war” regions East and West.
  1. You put a lot of emphasis on the values of rugby. May you please list them and explain why they matter and how they define rugby?

The values of rugby are solidarity, integrity, respect, passion and discipline. These are ethical and moral benchmarks to which athletes and public opinion must refer; they guide people in their daily lives with a taste for effort and perseverance. It is also a philosophy that transcends all borders in sport, at school, at home and at work. If I had to classify these values, I would put RESPECT first.

  1. The conferences are targeting teachers, unions administrators, students. Does your approach and message differ depending on the targeted groups?

As a former teacher – the content of the message remains the same, the form differs a little. The ‘speaker’ approach is used with students, players, and administrators. Whilst the ‘moderator’ approach is used with teachers and coaches.

  1. What do you expect your audience to take out of these conferences? If there is one key learning point to remember, what would it be?

I am trying to convey the following message to my audience:

  • Every day, around the world, millions of sports competitions (“conflicts”) are organized and supervised at school, university, sports federations, regional confederations, international federations, Olympic committees, etc.

These “conflicts” are instituted by the rule and its respect; they serve, in filigree, to:

  • Bringing competitors closer together rather than dividing them
  • Promote team spirit
  • Solidarity in difficulty
  • Establish equal opportunities
  • Push towards excellence
  • Celebrate merit
  • Convert the rugby player into a good citizen of his country or even of the world.
  1. Please share any other initiatives you have in the pipeline to commemorate such occasions.

I consider schools and universities to be a breeding ground for the development of rugby and I keep close contact with the universities.

Also, I am trying to set up a continental cooperation with the African University Sports Federation (FASU) which will be relayed at the national level by the various federations affiliated to Rugby Africa. In this sense, I host several conferences, each year, on the occasion of the International Day of Sport.

A line from Outriders refers to The US Capitol Riot, Dialogues of The Game was written two years ago

0

The writers of the co-op shooter Outriders have not ever referenced the mob that broke into the US Capitol in the month of January. Square Enix and People Can Fly have confirmed to Kotaku that the dialogues of the game were written and recorded a few years ago.

A representative told the site, “Any similarities to real-world events are purely coincidental.”

The similarity Kotaku asked about, sounds similar to a direct reference to the January 6 Capitol Building attack. The player character says in the game that they saved another character “from that redneck mob storming DC.”

US media heavily used the word “storming” during the January 6 riot, so it has a strong connection. The Wikipedia page of this incident has the title – “2021 storming of the United States Capitol.”

Kotaku noticed that the line is in the Outriders demo, which has been released on February 25. It is not practical that developer People Can Fly record the line and include it in the game within two months, and it doesn’t make any sense.

Another co-incident is when Ubisoft announced Rainbow Six Quarantine for early 2020 release, but then it was delayed. At that time, Ubisoft is calling it Rainbow Six Parasite internally, and it seems unlikely that it will still be called Quarantine when it releases.

The Division 2 is based on political violence in DC and a deadly virus, and it was launched near about the same time that Square Enix says Outriders was being written. People now finding out that whether Outriders is good or not.

Gigabyte seems to be making a new X570S motherboard for AMD, could be for Zen3+ “Warhol” CPUs

0

Its been almost 2 years since AMD announced their flagship X570 motherboards and from a new leak, it seems AMD might launch a new variant this year. The leak from the Eurasian Economic Commission certification office seems to suggest that a new X570S chipset is on its way.

Gigabyte has recently submitted eight new X570S motherboards to EEC, obviously, hearding this for the first time we cannot guess what S exactly stands for. It could mean SUPER or something else or maybe just X570S chipset, however, we do get confirmed a new chipset is on its way.

AMD is supposed to launch a new range of Zen 3+ Warhol CPUs later this year as we already know how could these Zen 3 CPUs are and can be pushed even more.

Now, it’s unclear whether AMD will give this architecture a new name and make it a separate genre as they did with Zen+ or just made refreshed Zen 3 processors as they did with Ryzen 3000XT.

However, seeing Intel’s condition with Rocket Lake-S desktop CPUs, this is a sensible move from AMD before rolling out the 5nm based Zen 4 based processors next year.

World Table Tennis Day: Top-5 sensational triumphs by Indians at Ultimate Table Tennis

0

Mumbai, April 6, 2021: Being dominated by countries like China and Japan, table tennis saw Indians struggling most of the time if not always against top-ranked international opponents. It isn’t the case anymore though, since the inception of India’s premier table tennis league Ultimate Table Tennis, where not just the country’s elite players but also youngsters rubbed shoulders against the world’s top paddlers and managed to beat them.

This was also followed by some consistent winning performances by Indians against higher-ranked players on the international stage. On World Table Tennis Day, here are the top-5 sensational triumphs by Indian paddlers against some of the world’s biggest names during three seasons of Ultimate Table Tennis.

Sathiyan’s stunning show

Reigning national champion Gnanasekaran Sathiyan was one of the big finds of the inaugural season of Ultimate Table Tennis in 2017. The Tamil Nadu paddler made headlines when he shocked World No. 8 Wong Chun Ting of Hong Kong 2-1 while representing Dabang Smashers T.T.C. Interestingly Sathiyan was ranked 110 in the world when he defeated Ting.

With this victory, he showed his remarkable skill set and swift gameplay. Two years later the Indian faced off once again against the same opponent and this time it was at an international event —the 2019 ITTF Asian Cup. Sathiyan capitalised on the confidence gained from the victory in UTT and went on to register one of the biggest wins of his international career with the 12-10, 10-12, 11-5, 11-6, 11-8 scoreline against the World Cup bronze medallist. With some impressive performances, he also achieved a career-best 24th rank — the highest ever for an Indian.

Scintillating Sutirtha

Ranked outside 200 in the world, Sutirtha Mukherjee had a memorable outing at the last edition of Ultimate Table Tennis in 2019. Representing U Mumba, Sutirtha caught everyone’s attention when she shocked World No. 9 Cheng I-Ching to lead her team into the semi-finals. The West Bengal paddler pulled off a stunning 2-1 win against the World Championship silver medalist star player from Chinese Taipei.

The paddler later in January 2020 at the World Team Qualifiers played a crucial role and kept the Indian challenge alive with a stunning 3-2 win against World No. 19 Bernadette Szocs before the team went down 2-3 against Romania. Currently ranked in the top-100, Sutirtha has already sealed a spot for her maiden Olympics at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Magical Manav

Manav Thakkar is currently ranked No. 1 in the World U-21 rankings and he’s also the first-ever Indian to achieve this feat. The youngster had shown a lot of promise with some breathtaking performances on many occasions during his appearances in the three seasons of UTT.

One such instance was in the second season in 2018 when he locked horns against a rival from Sweden, who was 223 places higher than him in the rankings. 18-year-old Thakkar showed a great display of skill and composure beyond his age to cause a major upset when he rattled World No. 18 Kristian Karlsson 2-1 to hand his side Empowerji Challengers a fine victory.

Manika’s memorable outing

Indian TT’s poster-girl Manika Batra put in impressive performances in the first season of Ultimate Table Tennis. Batra, while playing for Dabang Smashers T.T.C. in season 2, produced one of the memorable performances of the league when she upstaged World No. 18 Sofia Polcanova of Austria 2-1. Super Sharath

The record nine-time national champion Achanta Sharath Kamal is currently the country’s most experienced paddler. Seasoned campaigner Sharath registered a remarkable victory in the second season of UTT when he outshone the World Championships silver medalist Mattias Falck.

The veteran Indian knocked down Swedish World No. 20 2-1 while representing the Team Warriors. Earlier last year Sharath clinched his first ITTF title after a decade long wait at Oman Open and he also shocked World No. 16 German paddlers Patrick Franziska at the recent WTT Star Contender Doha before securing a place for his fourth Olympic Games.

How has a $1 component sparked a $450 Billion Industry to go into crisis?

0

A helpful detail to understand why the $450 billion semiconductor industry has lurched into crisis is knowing about a one-dollar part called a display driver.

Hundreds of different kinds of chips that run powerful computers or smartphones ranging from $100 a piece to more than $1,000 make up the global silicon industry. A display driver is mundane by contrast: according to LiveMint, the display drivers’ “sole purpose is to convey basic instructions for illuminating the screen on your phone, monitor or navigation system.”

The trouble for the chip industry is that there aren’t enough display drivers to go around as firms that make them can’t keep up with the demand so prices are increasing. That’s contributing to increasing costs and short supplies for liquid crystal display panels, essential components for making laptops and televisions, among other display-oriented devices.

“It’s not like you can just make do. If you have everything else, but you don’t have a display driver, then you can’t build your product,” says Stacy Rasgon, who covers the semiconductor industry for Sanford C. Bernstein.

Now the crunch in a handful of such seemingly insignificant parts is cascading through the global economy. Power management chips are also in short supply. Automakers like Volkswagen AG, Nissan Motor Co., and Ford Motor Co., have already scaled back production, which will end up in $60 billion lost revenue for the industry this year.

Before this gets any better, it’s likely to get worse. The Texas winter storm knocked out swaths of U.S. production. A fire at a key Japan factory will shut the facility for a month. Samsung Electronics Co. warned of a “serious imbalance” in the industry, while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.’s (TSMC) 100% capacity is not enough to fulfill demand.

“I have never seen anything like this in the past 20 years since our company’s founding,” said Jordan Wu, co-founder, and chief executive officer of Himax Technologies Co., a leading supplier of display drivers. “Every application is short of chips.”

2021-semiconductors-chips-shortage-inline
Image: Bloomberg

An ordering miscalculation as the coronavirus pandemic hit last year led to the chip crunch as many companies anticipated people would cut back on their spending as times got tough.

“I slashed all my projections. I was using the financial crisis as the model,” says Rasgon. “But demand was just really resilient.”

In a shocking turn of events for companies, people stuck at home started buying technology and then kept buying. They purchased better computers, 4K televisions, game consoles, milk frothers, air fryers, and immersion blenders. The pandemic turned into an extended “Black Friday onlinepalooza.”

Automakers were blindsided as they shut factories and told suppliers to stop shipping components, including the chips that are increasingly essential for cars. Then, later in 2020, demand began to pick up. People didn’t want to use public transportation. Automakers reopened factories and went hat in hand to chipmakers like TSMC and Samsung, who were so overwhelmed that they couldn’t make chips fast enough for their still-loyal customers.

Himax’s co-founder, 61-year-old, Jordan Wu is in the middle of the tech industry’s tempest. On a recent March morning, he agreed to talk to Bloomberg News in person with two of his staff joining there and another two dialing in by phone. He wore a mask throughout the interview, speaking carefully and articulately.

Himax started out by making driver ICs (for integrated circuits), as they’re known in the industry, for monitors and notebook computers. In 2006, they went public and grew with the computer industry, expanding into touch screens of all kinds. Their chips are now used in scores of products.

Wu explained pushing his workforce harder will not help make more display drivers. Himax designs display drivers and then has them manufactured at a foundry like TSMC. His chips are made on equipment that is at least a couple of generations behind the cutting-edge processes, artfully called “mature node” technology. “These machines etch lines in silicon at a width of 16 nanometers or more, compared with 5 nanometers for high-end chips.”

The chip's makers have seen their shares soar with strong demand

The bottleneck creator is the mature chip-making lines that are running flat out. Wu says the pandemic drove such strong demand that manufacturing partners cannot fulfill it. Coupled with the increase in usage of displays in devices such as refrigerators is causing an ever more shortfall.

LiveMint notes, “there’s been a particular squeeze in driver ICs for automotive systems because they’re usually made on 8-inch silicon wafers, rather than more advanced 12-inch wafers. Sumco Corp., one of the leading wafer manufacturers, reported production capacity for 8-inch equipment lines was about 5,000 wafers a month in 2020 — less than it was in 2017.”

More mature-node manufacturing lines are not being built because it doesn’t make economic sense. The existing lines are fully depreciated and fine-tuned for almost perfect yields, meaning, for less than a dollar, basic display drivers can be made. Buying new equipment and starting off at lower yields makes no sense.

“Building new capacity is too expensive,” Wu says.

That shortfall is showing up, a 50-inch LCD panel for televisions doubled in price between January 2020 and March 2021. Bloomberg Intelligence’s Matthew Kanterman says there is “a dire shortage” of display driver chips and projects that LCD prices will keep rising at least until the third quarter.

Making the situation worse is a lack of glass. Major glassmakers have reported accidents at their production sites that are leading to a shortfall. A blackout at Japan’s Nippon Electric Glass Co.’s factory in December and “an explosion at AGC Fine Techno Korea’s factory in January.”

All of this has seen Himax’s sales surging and its stock price tripling since November.

But the CEO isn’t celebrating and doesn’t expect the crunch, especially for automotive components, to end any time soon.

“We have not reached a position where we can see the light at the end of tunnel yet,” Wu said.
