Manchester City extend their winning run to 18 games

0

Manchester City extended their winning run in domestic competitions to 18 consecutive games with a 1-0 victory against Arsenal at the Emirates. Pep Guardiola once again showed Mikel Arteta that he has a long way to go to outsmart the Catalonian on his day.

Raheem Sterling scored the only goal two minutes into the match, and that was the difference between the two teams on the scoreline as Manchester City went one step further towards the Premier League title.

Kevin De Bruyne started the match and lasted an hour before being taken off. Although City looked more shaky after the Belgian was taken off, they managed to hold on to their solitary goal advantage till the final whistle to get the three points and the clean sheet.

Defending champions Liverpool suffered a loss to Everton at home in the Merseyside derby for the first time in over two decades to further capsize their chances of winning the title again. Leicester won against Aston Villa and are closest to City in the table, seven points behind the Sky Blues who also have a game in hand on the Foxes.

City really should have extended their lead on multiple occasions throughout the game, but a lack of clinical finishing prevented them from building on the opener from Sterling.

The victors will be taking their momentum from their winning ways into the Champions League fixture against Borussia Monchengladbach in midweek. Considering the form that City have been in recently, they are among the favourites to win the Champions League too. However, only time will tell whether that prediction comes true.

Lionel Messi makes history at FC Barcelona despite being held by Cadiz

0

Barcelona again dropped a point at their home ground, Camp Nou, after drawing 1-1 against Cádiz. A penalty was netted by the Barca captain, Lionel Messi, during the first-half penalty, which was later cancelled out by Aleix Fernández, scoring a penalty in the injury time. Later on, Barca was denied two goals ruling them out as offside after Frenkie de Jong and Pedri’s incorrect runs.

In the first half after netting the penalty, Barça maintained their continuous attack and could have added two more to the score with the help of De Jong and Pedri. Still, unfortunately, their goals were ruled out, claiming off for offside, which also included a peculiar moment when Antoine Griezmann came in the way of Frenkie. This shot was on its way to the back of the net, which was later made offside by Dest when he assisted Pedri.

Riqui Puig was sent to the ground in the late second half, and almost was on the verge of scoring an amazing goal with five minutes in hands to go, but Barca could not hold up their lead due to a very silly foul by Lenglet that resulted in a penalty for Cadiz, where they equalized the match. Later on, Barca couldn’t manage to win.

Although Barcelona tried to take over the control early and progressed ahead as Lionel Messi scored from the penalty spot to break his record of 506th LaLiga appearance. But eventually, they were held to a draw.

After numerous goals and assists and making the list of records longer all these years, as during the match against Cadiz, where Messi was leading the team, has broken an astounding record regarding his appearance for the Catalonian giants, Fc Barcelona too, as he has crossed Xavi being the player with the most appearances for Barca.

Also, Messi went on being the second player to score 60 penalties in LaLiga after Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 61 for Real Madrid.

Inter Milan earn an advantage at the top of the table with a statement Milan derby win

0

Inter Milan managed to extract revenge on their city rivals in the Milan derby that went in their favour, with the scoreline reading 3-0 at the end of the game. Lautaro Martinez grabbed a brace while Romelu Lukaku scored one for himself to put the Nerazzurri ahead at the top of the table, usurping AC Milan who had been at the top since almost the start of the season in itself.

While the goalscorers must be given credit, Inter keeper Samir Handanovic must also be given a special mention due to his heroics between the sticks that kept the clean sheet for Antonio Conte’s mean despite the opposition firing on all fronts since the beginning of the second half.

AC Milan fielded their first-choice XI, with the likes of Hakan Calhanoglu, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Gigi Donnarumma, Alessio Romagnoli and Theo Hernandez all making the starting lineup. However, they were bettered by their opponents who also had all their starters chosen.

The match was a classic display of Antonio Conte’s approach to football, with Inter ripping their rivals apart on the counter on multiple occasions. The most ruthless of the lot were the second and third goals.

Lautaro Martinez’s second goal was an epic display of teamwork from Inter Milan while the third and final goal of the game simply showed how dominant of a physical specimen Romelu Lukaku truly is. The Belgian ran with the ball at the defense from the halfway line before unleashing an unstoppable curling shot into the bottom left corner to beat Gigi Donnarumma.

That was Lukaku’s 17th goal in Serie A this season, putting the striker at the top of the pile in the race for the Golden Boot for the time being.

The victory gives Antonio Conte’s team the advantage at the top of the table, and they are currently four points clear of AC Milan, who fall down to the second place.

Novak Djokovic beat Daniil Medvedev in the 2021 Men’s Australian Open

0

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic won his 9th Australian Open title in the finals on Sunday. He defeated Danill Medvedev in straight sets 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.

The Serb’s 7-5 6-2 6-2 triumph at the Rod Laver Arena secured the 18th Grand Slam title of his career, bringing him within tantalising reach of Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal’s all-time record of 20.

Djokovic broke Medvedev’s 20-match winning run in emphatic fashion. The 33-year-old, who improved to 18-0 in the semi-final and final clashes at the Australian Open, also gained revenge for his 6-3, 6-3 loss to the Russian at last year’s Nitto ATP Finals. Now, Djokovic owns a 5-3 ATP Head2Head advantage against Medvedev.

“On the court, Daniil is one of the toughest players I have ever faced in my life. It’s only a matter of time before you hold a Grand Slam trophy,” Djokovic said, in the trophy ceremony. “If you can wait a few more years, I’d appreciate it. It’s amazing that he has put together a 20-match winning streak over the past few months.”

The Serbian made a quick start to his championship match at Melbourne Park. In less than 10 minutes, he charged into a 3-0 lead, as he returned with depth and capitalised on three Medvedev forehand errors to break serve at 1-0. Despite an immediate response from his Russian opponent, Djokovic rushed Medvedev at 6-5 with aggressive forehands and landed a backhand passing shot winner up the line to earn three set points. He converted his third opportunity when Medvedev fired a forehand into the net.

Djokovic’s confidence continued to grow throughout the third set and Medvedev could not find a way through his opponent’s defence. On his first championship point, Djokovic charged to the net and struck an overhead winner to clinch the trophy.

“Congratulations to Novak and your team. Nine Grand Slams in Australia and 18 in total is an amazing thing and it is probably not your last one,” Medvedev said, in the trophy ceremony. When the latest FedEx ATP Rankings are published on Monday, Medvedev will rise above 2020 runner-up Dominic Thiem, a career-high World No. 3, as a result of his run to the championship match.

In the second round, Djokovic secured a four-set win against Frances Tiafoe. He survived an abdominal injury scare but managed to defeat Taylor Fritz in five sets in the third round. He was also pushed to four sets by Milos Raonic and Alexander Zverev on his way to the semi-finals.

“I think it was a very successful tournament and I’d like to praise (tournament director) Craig Tiley for a tremendous effort,” Djokovic said. “It was challenging on many different levels and Tennis Australia should be very proud for making it possible,” he remarked.

Bundesliga title race is on after Frankfurt beat Bayern

0

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich lost 2-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt in their most recent outing. The Bavarians also lost their 9-match unbeaten run in the league in the process.

Goals from Daichi Kamada and Amin Younes gave Frankfurt the motivation to hold on until the last minute despite Robert Lewandowski doing what he does best, and pulling one back for Bayern. However, it was all to no avail since Hansi Flick’s men came off on the wrong side of the scoreline on the day.

Leroy Sane’s performance in the early stages left something to be desired once again, as the former Manchester City man was sloppy in possession. However, he was not the only attacker at fault as Kingsley Coman’s outing was also underwhelming. Marc Roca and Joshua Kimmich had a tough time getting things to click between each other.

Roca only recently arrived from Spain, and as young as he is, he still needs time to adjust to life in a new country and a big club of the size of Bayern Munich, coming in from the Segunda Division. Things became a lot more stable in the middle of the park once Leon Goretzka came on in the second half.

The title race has now been blown wide open in the Bundesliga, and the season could come to another hard fought conclusion. That is especially now that Leipzig are two points behind the reigning champions and league leaders.

Frankfurt, alongside Wolfsburg, are now on 42 points each with the two teams being separated on goal difference. Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund still lag behind, though, with 37 & 36 points respectively.

Jadon Sancho has turned his season around, achieving historic Bundesliga feat

0

In Borussia Dortmund’s 4-0 decimation of arch rivals Schalke in the Revierderby, Jason Sancho became the youngest player in the German Bundesliga to score 35 goals, at 20 years 10 months and 26 days.

Sancho managed to score his 35th Bundesliga goal in the 42nd minute before assisting Erling Haaland’s 45th minute strike to double their lead going into the break.

The Englishman has managed to get the numbers in as of late, managing to turn things around with 5 goals and 8 assists in 20 games that he has played so far in the league. Moreover, he has also scored two and assisted three in the Champions League.

The 19/20 season saw the former Manchester City youth product emerge onto the scene as one of the brightest youngsters in Europe, finishing the campaign with double digits in goals as well as assists.

After being linked to a move with Manchester United in the summer, Sancho’s form dropped and he couldn’t get going since the beginning of the season. However, he has managed to get himself back on track with the numbers coming in.

Here is what the England international had to say regarding the victory against Schalke:

“I know for this club that this game is everything,” he said. “So I knew today that was a big one for the fans.

“Especially because they can’t celebrate it with us, I had to show to the camera that it was very important to us.

“I’m just very happy and delighted for the win. We just have to carry on this form for the next game.”

As per a Tweet by GemWire, Twitch’s Chennai and Mumbai servers are now active. The tweet says “Live streaming platform @Twitch is likely making its way to India with the addition of local servers! The Mumbai and Chennai servers are seen to be online.”

However, Twitch has not made it official, and users are only hoping that they will soon make it online. However, the existence of their local servers indicates that Twitch may have now started recognizing the gaming and streaming potential of India. But severs in India of Twitch are now online.

In 2016, when Twitch made its way to India, the lack of servers in India was a major aspect for the gamers’ industry, especially to those who criticised it as a roadblock. Back in 2018, after their exit, their service was considered as a saving grace for unofficial IPL streams, but the fact was the site was itself banned by Indian ISP– Jio.

In the past few years, numerous Indian content creators joined Twitch and started streaming over there. Later on, they were demoralized due to high concealment because their servers were located at a distance.

Although, their re-entry to India after attempting it once in 2018 was maybe an issue itself for Twitch as there are so many live-streaming platforms like Facebook Gaming or YouTube, which already have so many user bases, and viewership.

Everton win the first Merseyside derby at Anfield in the 21st century

0

Everton won their first Merseyside derby in 22 years at Anfield as the visitors managed to defeat the reigning Premier League champions 2-0 in their own backyard.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Toffees were the better team on the night as Richarlison’s early opener was followed up by a penalty in the second half that was put away by Gylfi Sigurdsson to seal the deal.

Here is what Ancelotti had to say regarding the historic victory on the other side of the town:

‘I realise that I am the first manager that beat Liverpool after 21 years. I don’t know if this is enough to be in the history of this club, but if it’s not enough, I am working

‘I am really pleased and really happy for the club and the supporters. I could only imagine if our supporters were there tonight, but I hope they are going to celebrate tonight.’

The howling wind on the night made for a lot of long-range efforts, and resulted in many great saves from both Jordan Pickford as well as Alisson, despite the latter being beaten twice on the night.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was substituted after only half an hour into the game due to a niggling thigh issue that brought on Nat Phillips, resulting in Ozan Kabak and Phillips being the 18th unique centre-back partnership for Jürgen Klopp’s team this season, owing to their injury-plagued squad.

Moreover, Liverpool have now lost four home games in a row, after spending years unbeaten at their home ground.

Everton, on the other hand, will be heading into their game against Southampton with all the momentum in the world. Despite how the season ends, this could be one of the biggest victories in Everton’s history and turn the conclusion of the campaign around if they finish outside of the European places.
