What Is 29 About?

The 2-minute 33-second trailer opens with a cheeky dig at dating apps, claiming it will take the audience back to the early 2010s, when such apps didn’t exist. The film follows the life of Sathya, played by Vidhu, a 29-year-old man grappling with a severe identity crisis — at his age, society wants him to “settle down,” but the drifter that he is, he doesn’t have any clear ambition or dreams.

Before he gets pulled into the loop of marriage and kids, he wants to know who he actually is. His life takes a drastic turn when a 21-year-old, determined and ambitious woman, Vijayalakshmi aka Viji — played by Preethi Asrani — enters his life. She tirelessly works a minor job to fund her dreams of becoming an IAS officer.

The contrast is what makes 29 compelling. One character is adrift; the other has a north star. And somehow, they find each other. You can learn more about the coming-of-age genre in cinema on Wikipedia to appreciate what Rathna Kumar is tapping into here.

The Makers Behind It

The film is produced by Karthik Subbaraj, Kaarthekeyen Santhanam, and Lokesh Kanagaraj — three names that carry serious weight in Tamil cinema. Having the LCU architect Lokesh Kanagaraj backing a quiet, intimate drama like 29 is itself a statement that the film deserves more than passing attention. YouTube

Rathna Kumar, previously known for Meyaadha Maan and Aadai, brings that same grounded sensitivity here. While Rathna primarily called the movie a romance drama, she told The Hindu that self-discovery becomes the core of her movie, adding: “It will be a film that will give you a lot of hope.” YouTube

Why This Trailer Has People Talking?

The trailer showcases the hard-hitting emotional journey of the two lovers, where their relationship is tested by social pressures and the realities of growing up. It doesn’t rely on glamour or grand gestures — it relies on the messy, awkward, real feeling of being in your twenties and not having it figured out. That’s exactly why it resonates. YouTube
