IPL 2026 is just around the corner, and while cricket fever is building across the country, this year’s tournament will begin on a sombre, respectful note. The BCCI has decided to skip the opening ceremony for IPL 2026, a decision made to show sensitivity and respect towards the 11 victims of the stampede tragedy that took place in Bengaluru on June 4 last year during the celebrations of RCB’s maiden IPL title win. Business Standard
It’s a deeply human decision — and one that has resonated with fans across the country.

Why BCCI Took This Call
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia explained that the decision was made as a mark of respect for the 11 victims of the stampede in Bengaluru on June 4 last year, which occurred during celebrations of RCB’s maiden IPL title. In light of this, the IPL 2026 season will begin without its customary grand opening. However, the board has assured fans that the tournament will conclude with a spectacular closing ceremony on May 31, the day of the final. Cricket Times
The move marks a significant shift from the previous season. In IPL 2025, a high-profile opening ceremony was organised at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, featuring performances by Shah Rukh Khan, singer Shreya Ghoshal, artist Karan Aujla, and actress Disha Patani.
How RCB Is Honouring the Victims
The tribute doesn’t stop with the BCCI’s decision. Royal Challengers Bengaluru outlined multiple steps to honour the 11 fans who lost their lives. The franchise will permanently leave 11 seats vacant at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium as a tribute. Players will wear jersey number 11 during practice on match day and will also wear a black armband. RCB has also invested nearly Rs 7 crore into enhancing crowd safety at the stadium.
Despite the unfinished state of the ground, demand for the match has remained sky high — tickets for the RCB vs SRH opener sold out in just four minutes after going live on the booking platform. myKhel
The Indian Premier League, one of the most-watched T20 leagues in the world, has always been known for its glitz and spectacle — making this quiet, respectful beginning all the more powerful.
