Why did BCCI strip Bengaluru of the IPL 2026 Final? Ahmedabad Steps In as Chinnaswamy Drama Unfolds

IPL 2026 Final: It was supposed to be a homecoming. The defending champions, their passionate home crowd, their iconic stadium – the M Chinnaswamy Stadium roaring for an IPL final on its own turf. Instead, the BCCI just pulled the plug on one of cricket’s most anticipated venue moments — and the reasons behind it are as murky as they are dramatic.

IPL 2026 Playoffs & Final — Official Schedule

What Happened to Bengaluru?

As per established BCCI norms, the IPL final is always played at the defending champions’ home stadium. Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the reigning champions, making M Chinnaswamy Stadium the natural host for the summit clash.

But something went wrong behind the scenes. In an official statement, BCCI confirmed that Bengaluru was originally designated to host the final — but the venue was shifted due to certain requirements from the local association and authorities that were beyond the scope of BCCI’s established guidelines and protocols.

The Board’s statement deliberately kept the specifics vague, simply calling it “operational and logistical considerations.” Translation: someone asked for something BCCI wasn’t willing to give — and Bengaluru paid the price.

Reports suggest the controversy centred around local MLA ticket quota demands that exceeded what the BCCI protocols permit — a clash between political entitlement and sporting governance that ultimately cost the garden city its biggest cricket night of the year.

Why Three Venues — Not the Usual Two?

Unlike the usual two-venue trend for the playoffs, this season will be conducted across three different venues as a special case — a direct consequence of Bengaluru’s removal forcing a complete rescheduling of the knockout stage.

That means Dharamsala hosts the Qualifier 1 in its cool mountain air, New Chandigarh gets the Eliminator and Qualifier 2 back-to-back, and the world’s largest cricket stadium — the 132,000-capacity Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad — gets the final.

It’s a magnificent venue, nobody disputes that. But for RCB fans who dreamed of watching Virat Kohli lift a trophy in front of their own home crowd in Bengaluru? This one genuinely stings.

The Bigger Picture

The IPL 2026 schedule itself had an unusually complicated rollout — released in three phases due to elections in several states. The league stage schedule was announced in batches, and the playoffs schedule was finally confirmed only on May 6.

As RCB head into their crucial run-in — fresh from their Maldives break — the final destination is now clear: Ahmedabad, May 31.

Bengaluru lost its final. Ahmedabad got the biggest night in Indian cricket. The BCCI drew a line in the sand — and this time, protocol won over politics.
