Batwara 1947 Struggles to Rs. 24.25 Cr — Can Sunny Deol’s Film Turn It Around?

Sunny Deol’s partition drama Batwara 1947 was supposed to ride the wave of his Gadar 2 comeback. Instead, its opening weekend closed at a modest Rs. 24.25 crore nett, leaving the film needing something close to a miracle to avoid a disappointing run.

A Weekend That Fizzled Fast

After a promising Independence Day surge on Day 2, the film’s momentum collapsed on Sunday, dropping 45% to add just Rs. 6.75 crore. That kind of steep single-day fall this early is rarely a good sign for a big-budget release.

Why It’s Struggling

Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and backed by Aamir Khan Productions, Batwara 1947 carries a high budget and mixed audience reception — a tough combination made worse by its direct clash with Awarapan 2 this weekend. The story, which follows a Pakistani Sunny Deol saving a Hindu woman and her religion, is also a notably different beat than the fiercely patriotic Tara Singh energy that made Gadar 2 a phenomenon — and that shift doesn’t seem to be resonating the same way with the actor’s core audience.

What Comes Next

With a high budget to recover and no standout reviews to lean on, the film needs an unusually strong weekday hold to have any real shot at recovery. As of now, trade watchers see it heading toward a difficult outcome rather than the blockbuster run its team may have hoped for — a familiar risk for Bollywood films built around nostalgia for a previous hit.
