Why The Original Still Matters

Released in 2001, “Barbie in the Nutcracker” became a defining piece of early-2000s childhood, launching Barbie’s long-running animated storytelling legacy and introducing countless kids to ballet and classical music along the way. The story follows Barbie as Clara, whose Nutcracker comes to life before the Mouse King casts a spell, sending them on an adventure to find the Sugarplum Princess.

The original voice cast included Kelly Sheridan, Kirby Morrow, Tim Curry, Peter Kelamis, Christopher Gaze, and Ian James Corlett, with Owen Hurley directing. Now streaming again on Netflix, a new generation gets the chance to discover it while longtime fans can revisit an old favorite.

The New Special Coming This November

To mark the film’s 25th anniversary, Netflix and Mattel have announced a fully reimagined animated special set to arrive in November 2026, with an exact date still to be confirmed. Legendary choreographer Debbie Allen is on board as Co-Executive Producer and Choreographer, bringing her decades of dance expertise to shape the new ballet sequences.

Composer Macy Schmidt is handling the music, promising an updated, sweeping score to match the film’s reimagined visuals.

In a bittersweet touch, the special will feature a posthumous performance from the late Tim Curry, voicing The Rat King’s Father — a fitting tribute to an actor whose voice work spanned decades of beloved animated and film roles.

More Than Just A Streaming Release

The nostalgia wave extends beyond the screen. Earlier this year, Mattel launched a new doll collection inspired by the story and the upcoming special, bringing characters like Clara and the Sugar Plum Fairy into physical play sets — timed perfectly for the holiday season.

The Nutcracker itself remains one of the most enduring holiday traditions worldwide, rooted in the classic ballet that has inspired countless adaptations across generations, making it a natural fit for Barbie’s storytelling universe.
